I’m a fairly new content creator to Odyssey, and I would have to say my experience with it has been mostly super positive.
I love having an outlet to write about basically whatever the hell I want. For me, writing is something that calms me down, eases my anxiety and lets me say what's on my mind. I get it out there in a way I didn’t think was possible.
Whether it's a fun article on my sorority, an article about relationships, or an article about the personal things I’ve been through, everything I’ve written truly comes from the heart, and it's something I love being a part of.
However, there are a lot of people who have negative things to say about Odyssey. A lot of comments on popular articles have so much backlash, it can even lead the writer to delete their post or get viciously harassed online.
What people don't seem to understand is these are OPINION-based articles. It's simply students writing whatever they want to write about.
Odyssey gives college students around the country a creative outlet that they would never have normally had the chance to utilize. I personally think it's awesome to give students a voice they normally would never have.
Certain articles that get a lot of comments and seemingly negative feedback isn’t even necessarily a bad thing. It means you're getting people talking, you are starting a conversation, and sometimes your opinions will vary from others.
We all have different perspectives.
Some may also say the articles published on Odyssey may lack depth, but is it really that wrong for an article to be lighthearted? I know, personally, I like reading articles with humor to them. Not everything has to be so dreadful when reading online articles. These are pieces written by college students; this is not the New York Times or The Huffington Post.
There are so many things to get involved in on campus, and so many different organizations to be a part of. Odyssey is something I would definitely recommend to any college student who wants their voice to be heard, and get a conversation in their community going.
