Friday night and you find yourself drunk and hungry – but no way you can drive! Or maybe you’re in a major study session (ahem, Netflix) and don’t want to disrupt the grind. Here's Caddy to help you. Caddy is the first delivery app in Lubbock created by Texas Tech students Austin Turner and Brandon Wasson. I’m not going to bore you with all the details, but I will say they spent a lot of time to make it happen. What you really want to know, though, is how awesome it is.
My First Order:
I ordered from Caddy on a Thursday after seeing an article about it and I didn’t expect much. I opened the app, clicked order and chose my restaurant: Panda Express (the sloth of the fast-food world #ugh). Surprisingly, I was notified when a driver (Nick) accepted my order and when he was headed my way. He had some trouble finding my place – but still made it in 30 minutes! Once there, Nick called and found me in the parking lot. I explained I was writing an article and immediately he had such great things to say about Brandon and Austin. He said how determined they were – always working on the app. On top of a great conversation, I got a fork and a fortune cookie, so it was a great experience!
My Second Order:
I met with Austin and Brandon to talk over some questions and as I was saying goodbye – they had a TON of orders come in. It’s was a Saturday, so you know all the hung over college kids are hitting the app up for food. Anyway, I wanted to see how quick it’d be during a time when they’re busy. I knew there were about three to four drivers online and when I ordered, Austin accepted it. Being the slightly overbearing person I can be, I have to say – I love that I get notified at each step. I would hate waiting and not knowing where they are or if there are issues, so it’s super nice. Anyway, he was super quick and it only took about 15 minutes.
Why YOU (yes, you) should download Caddy Delivery NOW.
So if you have an android, you’ll have to wait a while for a compatible version, but iPhone lovers can rejoice! I absolutely love this app. At first I was totally against the idea – I don’t need another reason to be lazy, #amiright?! But, it’s not just for the lazy! I don’t know about y’all, but when I’m sick – I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to curl up in bed and never leave. Now I can order food (or more tissues and medicine) from my bed, and it comes to me. For those with kids, a grocery run can be unbearable! And even if you’re busy with homework, Netflix, or just forgot something when you went to the store – and another trip is out of the question. There’s also those who don’t have a car – but are always down for some Whataburger. Not to mention it’s easy to use, and they have an ‘other restaurant’ tab for those who want food from somewhere not listed (Sushi, anyone?).
Features and Details:
Because the menu and pricing for Panda Express are not on there, they estimated the order cost at $10 until the final amount was input by the driver. This was so they could estimate the delivery fee charged. Ultimately once the food is ordered, the driver inputs the real price and I’m charged the correct amount. I even get a photo of the receipt at the bottom of the screen once the order is closed, the physical copy of my food and an email receipt. Seems like a lot at first, but it makes sense and was totally easy to use. The delivery fee is usually about $5 or so. On the order screen, you’ll see the delivery fee and can click for more information to see what the current rate is. From there, drivers get 40 percent of what’s left after they get reimbursed for the food. Sounds like it’s not a lot – but gas isn’t even $2 a gallon and it doesn't take more than a gallon for a typical delivery.
How to be a Driver:
To be a driver, you must be 18 years or older, have a valid driver's license and be insured. You can apply in the app and they’ll meet with you to make sure you’re not "sketchy." Drivers have their own app where they can update us, lazy (or just #hangry) folks, on our order and how much it costs.
