As with any Disney Cast Member, former or current (or guest), we always get excited when Disney hypes us up for anything new they have going on. They’ve got us going coo-coo for cocoa puffs for the new "Star Wars" and "Toy Story" expansion. They have us on the edge of our seats for Shanghai Disneyland (that in itself is a touchy subject with Disney, as it has caused major cutbacks and us on the East Coast have to suffer the consequences), but the one thing that I’m sure everyone feels a tiny bit let down on is, what’s going on with “Rivers Of Light?”
“Rivers of Light” has been touted as Disney’s Animal Kingdom's nighttime spectacular. The background of this new night time show is a homage to traditional Asian lantern festivals and the myth behind the aurora borealis (more about that another time but basically, you need to see it for yourself as it’s a beautiful sight to see). According to Michael Jung, creative portfolio director of Disney Imagineering, the show follows the story of two spirit hosts who descend upon the river, bringing gifts of light to summon spirits of various animals in a dance of light and water.
On April 19, Disney gave the media a sneak peak of the new show and Visitorlando.com even live streamed it. It was beautiful, but even before the media debut, the show has been plagued with problems, including a barge sinking to the bottom of Discovery Lake. We’ve been given various debut dates, but even with the issues that the show was experiencing in technical rehearsal, the dates just kept getting pushed back further. Eventually this caused Disney to scrap the dates and let everyone know that it will debut sometime in 2016. Cast exclusive merchandise for the show was pulled a few days later, as per Disney management.
It’s no surprise that there is a huge expansion going on at Disney's Animal Kingdom. For any guest visiting the park, you can see the cranes moving the Floating Mountains into place, the Screaming Banshee being hoisted up into the air, all hiding behind the famous walls that are adorned with Walt Disney quotes.
With “Rivers Of Light” on hold for the time being, Disney's Animal Kingdom is offering a night time version of their famous Kilimanjaro Safari, featuring lions (and tigers and bears, OH MY!), giraffes and a multitude of other animals. Their “Tree Of Life” has been illuminated with over 50,000 lights with images of safari animals being projected against the tree itself. For the time being, Disney's Animal Kingdom is also offering a "Jungle Book" nighttime show based on the new live action movie of the same name.
I personally have my trip booked for this November, visiting during Wine and Dine half- marathon weekend. While I’m not interested in anything except for the nighttime safari and “Rivers Of Light”, after seeing the live stream a few nights ago, I’ve since become obsessed with the colors, vision and soundtrack, basically everything about “Rivers Of Light”. While the walls have since come down, I guess I’ll just have to keep wishing on a star in the hopes that “Rivers Of Light” will open this summer.
James Cameron’s Avatar Land is set to debut in early 2017 and their new night time offerings are being shown Memorial Day weekend through Fourth of July weekend.
