If you don't already know, Zumba is a type of exercise class that incorporates dance moves to workout. It is so fun that it almost feels like you are not even working out! I have done Zumba for two years now, and I am absolutely in love with it.
Although it is technically a dance class, you don't have to be good or even know how to dance to have a blast in this type of class. The environment is entirely uplifting and all about self-empowerment. Who doesn't want to have fun while working out? The music is enjoyable, the moves are fun, and the atmosphere is inviting.
To me, Zumba is so much more than an exercise class. It is a place where I feel comfortable enough to express myself through dance and have fun. There is a sense of community in the class as we all dance our little butts off. I've gotten a few of my friends to try it with me, and now we go as often as we can. By inviting a few people or having a partner to go with, you are able to hold each other accountable for going or not. Don't worry if you have to go alone; there are always friends to be made in class.
Every week I anticipate spending 45 minutes that are all about myself, mentally and physically. Focusing on making the routine your own is always a challenge that I like to pursue. It's an amazing stress-reliever and unlike a typical workout routine, I look forward to going. Even after a bad day I leave the gym smiling from Zumba class. When I can't make it to at least one class a week, I notice my mood is not as positive as it is when I go. When I hear the songs from our routines outside of class there is this automatic sensation of joy. I'll never listen to Justin Bieber's "Sorry" without doing the routine in my head again. I find myself thinking about the fun times I had in class with all of the great people who attend.
All of the instructors at GVSU in particular are so encouraging, and make the classes what they are. As I go every week, they begin to recognize me, which makes the class even more welcoming. They work hard to construct routines that are easy enough to learn quickly, but hard enough to give us a workout. Another great aspect of the program is there are multiple instructors with varying dance backgrounds and styles. Each one has their own way of teaching and choreographing, which gives participants a different experience.
Whether you have years of dance under your belt or none at all, Zumba is a great place to let loose and not care about who is watching. Zumba isn't everyone's cup of tea, but who knows, it could be yours and you wouldn't even know it. Check out a class: you might fall in love with it!
