Ten weeks ago I moved into my dorm at Washington State University. While my school isn't too far from home, it is on the complete opposite side of the state. After moving into college I had to pick what was going to be the most important to me over these next four year and what I wanted to get involved in. I have had some great opportunities and have had so many chances to learn about myself. These are some of the top things that I have learned from my first ten weeks at WSU.
1. You don't need to join a sorority to make friends
Coming into college I thought that the only way I could make friends would be to get involved in greek life, but the truth is that getting involved in things that I was actually passionate about allowed me to make more friends that I actually connected with.
2. Speaking of friends, they're actually not that hard to make
Seriously, I thought making friends would be hard, but putting yourself out there and always being willing to go to events is the absolute best way to make connections.
3. Your grades matter, but they're not everything
While it is important to get good grades and to study, it's also important to take time for yourself and to grow as an individual. College is for learning and if you're not learning about yourself, you're not doing it right.
4. Your roommate doesn't have to be your best friend, but you should at least be nice to them
My roommate and I aren't best friends, but she is someone that I can come to if I need something. When you're living with someone in a tiny room for ten months, being at least cordial with them is highly important.
5. Going out isn't all that
While yes, it is fun to go out with your friends, it's also fun to just stay in and play games, read, draw, or take time for yourself. Like I said, college is still for learning and you're paying a lot to be there, don't abuse it by going out every Tuesday.
