What You Can't Experience Via Zoom At FSU

When I became a Florida State student, there were so many things I was excited to do! There is much more to being a college student than simply going to class. So many different experiences are tied to not only being a college student, but a student at Florida State.

1. Living on campus.

Living in a dorm for your freshman year is like a right of passage. Most students live on campus for their first year in order to get acclimated with their new home. You get to meet so many new people and really get to know the ins and outs of your campus. I met some of my best friends through the dorms and I can safely say living in a dorm is what made my college experience what is became. Not getting that experience is something I really can not imagine.

2. Hanging out on Landis Green.

Landis Green is in the center of campus and is one of the best places to spend a free afternoon. Students go to Landis Green to relax, study, throw a football, or even take a nap in one of the hammocks! I used to study for exams on Landis and just take in the fresh air. Not only that, but Landis Green is the cite of many different campus events throughout the year! I can not imagine seeing Landis Green without the students to occupy it.

3. Studying at Strozier.

I know it seems weird to miss a study spot but you can not replace Stroz! Strozier library is the most popular library on campus and is constantly flowing with students. Not only is Stroz where most students cram for their finals, it is where most students stop in the morning for their coffee. Getting a study room with some of your friends and spending the day in Strozier is extremely common amongst students.

4. Late night dinners at Suwannee.

Suwannee is definitely not a five star restaurant, nobody is claiming that. But, there is something about late night dinners at Suwannee with your squad that just HITS SO PERFECTLY. Every student can safely say there was a night where you and your friends were starving and decided to take the walk to Suwannee. Having so many different options, everyone is happy and full upon leaving. Getting the biggest table and having a family dinner with your friends has got to be one of the best things!

5. School pride!

Everyone knows that if the Florida State Seminoles have anything, we have school pride. Whenever you walk around campus, you see nearly every student repping Florida State in some way. Not only that, but FOOTBALL GAMES?? The student section is FILLED for all games and the stadium is roaring. Students and fans come together to cheer on the one thing we know we agree on, WE LOVE FSU! That sense of community is something nobody can feel via a computer screen and will definitely hurt our students.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
