With recruitment around the corner, you are probably wondering whether or not you should sign up to be a part of Greek life. I have recently joined a sorority myself, but there are a few things I wish I had known before joining.
1. You will meet half of your bridal party.
--The bond that you create with your pledge class will be like no other. Some of the girls I met when joining my sorority I wish I had known my entire life. These are the girls that will get you through the frat guy that treated you badly, difficult finals, and other personal issues you would not dare tell anyone else.
2. You will miss your friends that are not in your sorority.
--It will be hard to make time for your friends that are not in the same sorority, especially during recruitment, but the true friends will be there through it all. The Serena to your Blair will always love you, no matter the letters.
3. There is a stereotype that goes along with being in a sorority.
--Apparently, Elle Woods did not teach everyone in this world a lesson. People who do not understand Greek life are going to have their opinions and judgments about your sorority. The typical sorority girl stereotype probably does not fit your personality, yet people will assume that you are Sorority Girl Sally. Keep your head up. Know that the only opinions that matter are the ones who know what joining a sorority truly means to you.
4. You are not going to like every girl in your sorority…
--…and that is OK. A group of 100 girls is bound to have their differences and disagreements. You will learn who your true friends are. The mean girls and girls who create issues with you do not matter. Brush it off. Bitch to your best friends. Life goes on.
5. You will have a whole new collection of t-shirts.
--I am not going to lie, the adorable t-shirts are one of my favorite parts about joining a sorority. You will find that you are able to get a new one every couple of weeks. Although these new clothes seem as though they are rolling in, free of charge, be aware that eventually you are going to get a bill for the 12 new t-shirts you willingly signed up to buy.
6. It is one of the best decisions you will make.
--Despite some of the drama, joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I made in college. (Aside from studying, of course, dad.) You will make so many friendships, connections and memories that will last a lifetime. Being in a sorority also looks amazing on a resume, and holding positions such as President or Treasurer looks even better to potential employers.
If you are debating with yourself whether or not to sign up for recruitment, stop questioning yourself, and dive in. It remains true that Greek life is not for everyone, but if you truly want to be in a sorority, you must trust the system. You are going to end up in the right sorority for you. Take a deep breath, be yourself, and enjoy this new life journey.
