Write What You Know

“Write what you know, so they say. All I know is I don’t know what to write or the right way to write it.” - "Watch What Happens," from "Newsies."

With so many different topics to choose from, I find it hard to choose just one each week. People often say write what you know; the trouble is I don't always know.

Due to the different projects that I’ve been working on and my assignments for classes, I thought i might try something different this week. Rather than write a piece on a trending topic or giving my opinion about a certain subject, I’d like to take this time to introduce myself.

My name is Concetta Frawley. On my personal blog, and often on Facebook, I prefer CC Night. Recently, I have chosen this as my pseudonym. CC represents my first and middle initial and Night is representative of my fascination with the night and the hours I spend working at night.

Currently, I am studying to attain my BA in Creative Writing and English from Southern New Hampshire University. Previously, I have studied music composition and American Sign Language.

I feel my career as a writer is just beginning. I have no specific direction at this point, but the prospects feel endless. When I first started this journey I thought I would be a lyricist since I love music and poetry. I have several different pieces written. My first set of lyrics is a piece called ‘Middle Class Dreamer.' Since then, I took time to write poetry in a poetry workshop. I found that I’m pretty good when it comes to free writing and villanelles. I also have a screenplay that I want to tweak a little before sending out. I’m currently working on my first play and I have a concept for a young adult fantasy novel.

That’s some background on what I am. Now, if you’re like me, seeing the achievements or the works in progress is great, but what about who the person is? What do they do outside of all the writing? What do they enjoy?

Digging a little deeper into the life of CC Night a reader finds a hard of hearing writer trying to make a living. I’m not talking working minimum wage though. I work in a call center, which is maybe one of the most stressful jobs a person can have. While it isn’t my dream job, it does pay my bills with some extra money to pursue my dream. As for what I do outside of writing, well, I think it all finds a way to relate back. I do have a passion for music and enjoy new bands. I also enjoy reading all sorts of different novels and attending comic cons. I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite young adult authors, Claudia Gray. If you haven’t read the "Evernight" series, I highly recommend it.

As a beginning writer, I enjoy the process of learning and workshopping. As I finish each new project, I have a professional contact, and I’m still building those, workshop it for editing. Before I graduate, I hope to have the play ready to send out. Right now it’s my prized piece and getting the most attention. For more information about CC Night, or to ask questions, I can be found on Facebook, Twitter or on my personal blog, concettaperformerwriter.weebly.com.

Thank you for allowing me this introduction to the beginning writer.

~CC Night

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
