What To Look Forward To In 2016

Another new year is here, and with it come new and exciting books, movies, and events that have the capability to make their mark on the world. Here’s a list of five things you should be looking forward to in 2016.

1. "My Name Is Lucy Barton" by Elizabeth Strout

This novel, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout, will leap onto the scene later this January. The tender portrayal of a relationship between mother and daughter is bound to be an unforgettable experience that will help you start out the new year right. The novel’s story surrounds a singular hospital visit and a woman named Lucy and will show every reader the importance and incredible compassion of humanity. Strout's other works include the notable, prize-winning novel "Olive Kitteridge."

2. "Orphan Black" Season Four

Coming this spring the breakout science fiction thriller will be back with 10 more episodes. The television series previously explored the relationships between female clones lead by Sarah (played by the talented Tatiana Maslany) and the dangers that face them. The series is shown on BBC America, and Tatiana Maslany has been nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of nine different characters in the show. This series is sure to blow your mind, so if you haven’t begun to watch it yet, make sure 2016 is the year you do.

3. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"

The film adaptation of the novel spin-off from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is coming to theaters this November. The movie takes place in the same magical world as Harry Potter but features Newt Scamander as the main character who attempts to capture magical creatures throughout New York City. Hopefully the movie, the first in a possible trilogy, follows in the footsteps that Harry Potter left behind.

4. United States Presidential Election

This November the 58th presidential election will take place. The election campaigns have not yet produced clear winners for any party, which in itself emphasizes the importance of all generations registering to vote.

5. "Blackstar" by David Bowie

The musicians 25th album will be coming out this January and it will (hopefully) be one of the most popular albums this year. He has said that the album has an incredible likeness to Radiohead. David Bowie has been making music for the last 50 years, and this album is a wonderful portrayal of hard work and talent continuing into a lifelong career.

So keep an eye out throughout 2016 for these books, movies, music and events!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
