Homecoming: where one goes home for a football game. I think. As someone who has never really gone back home for Homecoming, I can only imagine what we can expect, but it is something that I think about every Homecoming, just because the word kind of compels one to think of that. Anyways, here is what I expect to see or experience if I go home for Homecoming.
Seeing everyone at the football game.
As someone who usually likes to show up to football games late because they last about four hours -- which is insane -- it is impossible to go unnoticed. I just imagine walking up near the student section and a few of my favorite teachers shouting my name and then before I even know it, everyone is aware of my attendance -- because you know I am just so popular.
Seeing everyone you don't want to see at the football game.
While you will most likely see teachers that are cool and the occasional friend's little sisters, there are always the people you don't want to see. Whether it's the teacher who didn't really like you or that person who is your age and decides to attend every home football game just because they can, and then you are obliged to explain how great college is, etc.
Having to explain your major.
After seeing said teachers and moms comes explaining your major, which is hard to do something when you study English like I do. With that comes explaining what you want to do after graduation, what your GPA is and everything that every college student hates thinking about because now we are home, watching a football game with people we intended on avoiding, and now on top of everything, we are stressed out and don't really know what our future holds.
Feeling like a has-been.
Honestly high school football games are great, filled with jumping kids, fireworks and just a great atmosphere. So attending the Homecoming game would fill me with pride, but just sitting there with a big ass smile on my face, and then looking around and noticing that I'm way too excited for being graduated makes me feel a little has-beenish. But that's just the price you pay.
People mistaking you for a high school student.
Even though I am three years out of school and like to think that I carry myself as older and more mature, I know for a fact I would be mistaken as a student and be asked to go sit in the student section, where the kids would probably ask me if I am a new student. This alone scares me away from the Homecoming game enough, without the things I mentioned previously.
The moral of all of these points is yes, go to your Homecoming game. Talk to your old teachers and friend's moms, and even talk to the people you wanted to avoid, but enter at your own risk. Be very careful at the game, so that everyone can sense your age and know you are wise because you attend college and that just makes you wise. And hopefully one day soon, I will build up the courage to visit home for the Homecoming game.
