Effective the afternoon of November 28th, 2017, the GM of the New York Giants Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo have announced that Eli Manning will be benched for the Raiders game on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017.
I have watched the New York Giants since I was a small child. I was a fan pre-Manning, but that doesn't mean I don't understand the resurgence of the fan base when Eli Manning started being the QB in November 2004. Eli has 210 consecutive starts, second-most of all time behind Brett Favre. Eli doesn't care about a streak, he cares about playing the only game he's ever known, and winning games.
This is exactly why the team throwing this 2-9 season on the face of the organization for over the last decade is absolute blasphemy. This man not only is the face of the organization, is the franchise QB, and has been the only starting QB for the Giants since November 2004.
You don't see Pittsburgh treating Big Ben this way, or even the Ravens with Joe Flacco.
You do not throw the blame on one person when your team is 2-9, and constantly having player to coach issues. This team has coaching staff problems, problems all around. Every single loss, Eli took this in stride and yet, never seem to say anything bad about the coaching and other issues. He took the blame like a man and a leader, and yet, this is how the organization is treating him. This is how the organization is treating Eli. He had to hold back tears during the press conference.
As most of us know, the Mara family has owned the Giants since their existence starting in 1923. John Mara is the current owner, who has never believed in firing coaches mid-season, like a lot of older owners/GM's who have been in the game for a long time. As much as I understand that (for draft pick reasons, starting QB reasons, etc), Reese and McAdoo needed to go by week five the latest. It's ridiculous that Mara thinks this is okay. He currently is at the owners meeting in NYC, but Eli and Mara haven't spoken about this together whatsoever. For someone whose led the team since November 2004, who is the ONLY quarterback and team to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots IN A SUPERBOWL, TWICE, you would think they would have spoken about this before any of this would hit the press.
You would think.
As a fan, this hurts my absolute soul. I know Eli Manning turns 37 in January, but you do not do someone dirty like this. Past players who were already vocal about this trash dumpster fire of a season have taken to Twitter, and it's become ugly.
David Diehl, Offensive Lineman, spent his whole career with NYG 2003-2013 (only one year without Eli Manning)
Carl Banks, Linebacker for NYG 1984-1992, pre-Manning era weighed in in many tweets, but this one circulated around the most
Osi Umenyiora, two-time Superbowl Champion with the NYG (2003-2012) Outside LB/DE
This is only three of the many former players who have taken to Twitter, and even Kurt Warner has released a statement, and the best coach the organization will ever see, Tom Coughlin.
You don't have to be a Giants fan to understand how terrible this is. This isn't how you treat your franchise QB, the face of your organization. This isn't how it's suppose to be, I know that the NFL is also a business, but this isn't a prime example of how to run one. Someone needs to tape this whole season and show it for a not how-to.
You deserve better, Eli Manning.
Signed,
A very sad and hurting New York Giants fan.
