The term “self-care” has been used frequently among a lot of people lately, including me. What does it actually mean, and how can one achieve it?
According to Merriam-Webster, self-care is described as “…care for oneself,” or “…health care provided by oneself often without the consultation of a medical professional.” The latter refers to health care as buying over-the-counter medication or similar methods.
The author of this article wants to focus on the former part of this definition. While there are so many different ways to achieve self-care, I want to share my own personal ways of doing so. Everyone has their own individual way of self-care, so my list should serve merely as a suggestion.
Here is a list of recommendations for achieving self-care:
Water
It sounds simple enough, but I find I am more recharged and centered when I’ve drunk an adequate amount of water throughout the day. According to WebMD's website, water helps you feel less fatigued in combination with hydrating your body. Stay hydrated!
Music
It doesn’t matter how you listen, through a streaming service or not, music helps my mood tremendously. While music tastes vary, I can feel uplifted or focused with a throwback 90’s R&B ballet or a current track of my liking. May good musical vibes find you!
Writing
Writing of any form helps me think better because I feel much more focused. It could be a poem, song, or short story. Journaling clears my mind as well and all of my thoughts are placed in one space, fluidly. Happy writing!
Reading
I am an avid reader and have been since a young age. In adulthood, reading helps to relive stress and aids in self-care when I need it. Right now, I am currently reading the Black Butler manga series. Read away!
TV Show or Movie
From a comedy to a drama, I can achieve self-care by watching a TV show or movie. I like a wide range of titles and genres, so an anime could also suffice. Wishing you a much-needed watching experience to help boost your mood!
A small note from the author: While self-care doesn’t solve everything, I do hope this list helps relieve stress and provide some refocus. Everyone deserves to take time out for themselves, and to anyone reading this, you are no exception. Take care, everyone!
