I’m not going to lie and say that I don’t have any interest in getting clothes, money or apartment décor, because everyone loves presents. There’s a trick about getting gifts, though -- the excitement of getting what you wanted goes away after a few days when you realize that what you wanted is now a reality. It was something you looked forward to for months, and now you have it. Now what? Do I need to wish for more to fulfill the excitement that has left me from the months of anticipation? More, more, more, right?
Wrong.
That anticipation is the dilemma that many of us face post-Christmas. It’s a feeling that is bittersweet, because all the excitement is slowly fading away. You start to long for something more. You realize that the presents don’t really mean much. If you are constantly searching, wanting, convincing yourself you need something, you are going to fall down the rabbit hole of constant disappointment.
That’s why, this Christmas, I’ve made a list of things that I really want from my loved ones, where the feeling of excitement and happiness doesn’t fade away.
1. Being able to run to you in times of need, whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m.
2. Truly delighting in the Lord and helping me grow closer to Him.
3. Spending quality time just watching movies, hanging out, and laughing all night with me.
4. Helping me stay focused on my long-term goals, and not letting minor bumps keep me from pursuing what I really want.
5. Looking out for my best interest, even when I can’t see it.
6. Understanding that I am human, and I make mistakes.
7. Helping me learn to forgive myself for said mistakes.
8. Knowing when I need coddled, and when I need space.
9. Helping me stay organized and on-track.
10. Supporting me through everything.
If you have already bought me a present, I am eternally grateful. However, if you haven’t, then these are the things I want from you this year. Because, in the end, the gifts will deteriorate and I will have nothing to show for. Unless, of course, I have support, love and appreciation from those who mean the most to me. That would truly be the best Christmas present ever.
