On July 30th, I embarked on a week long adventure to build houses for single mothers who have been abused, neglected, and trafficked from a young age. However, while I was there I learned so much more. Most of the population in Mexico are very poor, living below the poverty line. Most of the kids wore the same thing everyday, and they can only afford to eat beans and rice. The water gets turned on twice a week, and most don't get to take a shower(s). Although, for some reason, they still choose to smile everyday.
The parents still choose to go to work everyday. The children still choose to play with their friends. Despite the needs they have, they choose to make the most out of life. My wish is that in America, we can learn how to live happily. In all reality, there are needs we need fulfilled, and schedules that need to be fulfilled, yes, but what if we started living in the moment?
Getting to interact with those hurting women and children made me realize how lucky we truly are to have what we do in America. Let's stop thinking about ourselves for once, and think about others. There is a lot we can learn.
