6 Reasons To Love Los Angeles

And NO, Hollywood isn't one of them.

If you're a Trojan, I think it's safe to assume that you have a positive view of Los Angeles (hopefully anyway). You moved out here all the way from somewhere else, or you opted to stay here after growing up here and passed up the option to try out a totally new place. Either way, you chose the City of Angels over another city, and I think you made the right choice.

With that said, there are many negative stereotypes about LA and its inhabitants. Worse, in my opinion, is when Los Angeles is lauded as amazing with its least important amenities as evidence, such as the Hollywood sign or the Sprinkles cupcakes ATM at the Americana at Brand. Not that these aren't cool, but there's certainly much more to the city than an old sign that's surrounded by gates or a miniature cake with way too much frosting. With that in mind, here are six real reasons to love Los Angeles.

1. A truly diverse set of outdoor areas nearby

Some places are "mountain towns," some places are "beach towns" -- Los Angeles is both. Plus a desert town, I suppose. Where else can you find beaches on one end of the city and mountains on the other, and be able to visit either one basically year-round? Plus, these aren't the mountains where you need below-zero gear. Instead you can grab some casual athletic gear and go for a leisurely hike on Eaton Canyon.

2. There is something for everyone

Contrary to what non-Angelenos think, we're not all shallow, wannabe movie stars. There is so much to LA and there are so many unique neighborhoods within it. Anyone can find a piece of the city that appeals to them, wherever their interests lay.

3. Weather that’s rarely bad

There might have been a weird flurry of snow in LA in February, but generally speaking Angelenos are dealing with a pretty wonderful climate. Unlike most other U.S. cities, you rarely have to bundle up, and it's not dreary and rainy all the time. Never do we have to worry about true winter weather driving, which entails accidents and snow plows and, atbest, delayed commutes.

4. All the professional sports you could want

Football? Two teams. Basketball? Two teams. Soccer? Two teams. Baseball? Sort of two teams ("Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" is nonsense, but that's a rant for another day). I think you get the picture here. And I mean, LA has LeBron now. That's huge and something only our city has.

5. So much incredible ethnic food

This is quite honestly one of my favorite things about LA. It seems like every month a new and awesome place is opening up somewhere around the city. There are endless options for any cuisine you can think of and seemingly at every price point. Don't be afraid to venture beyond University Village -- it'll be worth it to check out all the amazing food options.

6. Being able to laugh off LA stereotypes because you know the truth

Is there anything more satisfying than schooling a non-local when they make a disparaging comment about Los Angeles? I argue no.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
