What is one thing that makes your life “worth it?" I feel that in the time we live in, this isn’t something we find ourselves asking often. We are a generation filled with “I can’t” and “I have nothing." Don’t get me wrong, I myself am very guilty of this too. However, I have taken it upon myself to write down at least two things that make what I do in my day-to-day life worth it and I think you should, too.
I started dancing for my high school when I was the mere age of 13. No dance experience and very little flexibility, I walked into those try-outs scared out of my mind. Some girls on the team were eighteen and had been dancing since they were two. There were even two girls on the team whose mom owned her own studio. I went in and gave it my all and ended up making the junior varsity team. My experience on junior varsity was great, fun long nights with other girls my age and spaghetti dinners were the highlights. My drive to be better started the day I saw the varsity jazz team put the final touches on their dance. I waddled up to those captains and asked them to please help and teach me to turn like them. The next year, 8th grade, I made varsity jazz and kick (and probably peed my pants when I found out). Now, heading into my senior year of competing, my second year as captain and (hopefully) my sixth time returning to the state floor, I can feel my tears coming up. What makes my life, all this work and many nights of frustration, all worth it is my team. To not only create a final year so special for myself and the other seniors, but to show everyone who doubted us at our tiny school that we are a force to be reckon with. I’ve been able to meet some amazing, crazy characters through this program and owe it all to my coaches for giving that lanky eighth grade girl a shot.
Education has always been a very important aspect of my life. My older sister has burned into my mind from a young age that I can have fun and do everything I’ve ever dreamed of doing, with the notion that school comes first. I am lucky enough to go to a school with a great education system, offering both PSEO (post secondary enrollment options) and the rigorous IB courses equipped with different tracks for whatever suits a student best, which I do both of. It has been my dream to create my own future, leave my mark on the world and truly change people’s lives. What makes my life worth it in the aspect of education, is when people tell me I’m already doing what I’ve always dreamed. I get random comments from friends or even strangers saying that what I said about a situation or what I did differently had an impact on them. It gives me a sense of, “hey, maybe I am better than I think I am." I'm doing what I want to do, I just have to get a degree and go bigger to help others.
Give yourself 10 minutes a day and just stop to ask yourself, “why am I doing this?” and “does it make my life 'worth it?'”
