College professors can be both the scariest people and the most amazing people to their students. College opens a new door for students where they are beginning to pave the way to their future career, and they don't get the same relationship with their college professors as they did with their elementary and secondary teachers. College professors are amazing people who help their students grow in many ways, but here are a few things your students want you to know.

We need help

No one's perfect. Even you aren't. I'm not saying we should be given less work, but we need some help with it when we're confused. Just showing us that you'll work with us when we need some help will mean more to your students than you can imagine.

We have medical and emotional issues

These aren't excuses, but these are serious issues that affect how we function in your classroom and complete your classwork. Once again, we're just people and just knowing that you care about us means so much.

You are not our only class

We are taking four, five, even six or seven classes at a time. We know that we need to get the work done for all our classes, but when we have three papers due on the same day, things get difficult.

We want you to like us

We try so hard to get good grades in your class and we want you to live us. We want you to remember us when we leave your classroom and be someone we can look up to and ask for help when we need it.

We really are trying

Like I said before, we're trying so hard. We have so many classes we need to focus on and we're trying to give 100% to all our classes. Yeah, there are a few people who won't try, but don't make them change your opinions about the entire class. We are trying.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
