What I've Learned This Past Year, Take Note

A whole year has gone by and there are many things that I learned. I had many ups and downs, most of us did. What only matters is how we get up and overcome our obstacles. With 2018 starting, I have learned so many things.

1. Be Bold.

For example, if you like someone, just approach them, don’t wait for them to realize. Or do something you have never done before but always wanted to do.

2. Changes Will Happen.

No one likes change, but don’t be afraid of it. Change happens for a reason and it will all be worth it at the end of the day. Just take it as it comes.

3. Be Brave And Courageous.

This means standing up for what yourself and your beliefs, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. For me, tutoring at Rikers Island was one of the bravest things I have ever done.

4. Let Go Of Toxic Friends.

Yes, it may be hard to let go of those we love, but it’s for the best. Once a friendship becomes one-sided, there is no one way of fixing it. You need friends who will be there to support you and encourage you to be a better person.

5. Be Positive.

Things will become hard at some point but please don’t give up. Always think the best out of every situation. Sending my best vibes to all of you.

6. Work On Yourself.

I cannot stress this one enough. Go out and enjoy a day to yourself. Do what makes you happy. You must think about yourself sometimes. YOU ARE IMPORTANT.

7. Don’t Be Afraid To Say NO.

I always say “yes” to everyone, why? Because I like to please people and they usually become accustomed to it. But there comes a point in where you're too tired or stressed to do anything, and saying no is the best thing to do.

8. It’s Okay To Cry.

Most people who know me know that I don’t cry easily but this year my emotions were all over. If it wasn’t school or work, I was an emotional wreck. For once in my lifetime, I have allowed myself to cry on numerous occasions. So, if you feel like crying let the tears fall. It is best to cry than to hold them in, trust me on this one.

9. Be Confident, But Not Too Confident.

If it weren’t for my best friend who opened my eyes about this, I would’ve never known. She told me “It’s great that your confidence is growing, but don’t be a jerk while you're at it.” At first, I didn’t understand, but I began to notice my changes and decided that it was great that my self-esteem grew, but my attitude was horrible. So, I decided to change and honestly, I haven’t felt this great since a long time ago.

10. Stop Comparing Yourself.

I beg you please stop comparing yourselves. It doesn’t do you any good. Stop looking at other girls and thinking that they are prettier, smarter, or more than you’ll ever be. Love starts with yourself.

11.Not Everyone Is Going To Root For You.

Some people don’t want you to succeed, so keep pushing forward and prove them wrong. But don't overwork yourself while your at it, everything comes at the right timing.

12.Tell The Ones You Love That You Love Them.

It’s important to let the ones you love that you love them. Someday they won’t be here and you’ll regret not letting them know how much you love them. Make sure they know how much you love them. On that note to all my family and friends, I love you. Without you, life wouldn’t be the same.

This list could go on and on, but I’ll stop here. Maybe some of you have gone through the same things like me and learned from these experiences. Hopefully, this year will bring more amazing things into my life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
