What I learned From My First Semester Of College

With finals week coming to an end, it is time to sit back and think about the wonderful things you learned from this amazing first semester.

What I learned From My First Semester Of College

You lose friends along the way, but you also gain friends.

In high school, you see your friends everyday, but once you go off to college, you go your your separate ways and can't keep in touch with everybody. Even though you lose friends, you meet amazing friends in college that are there to toast your bagel for you or to keep you company in the library at three in the morning.

Work hard; play hard.

College is a blast. You have tailgates, socials during the week, bonfires, etc. It's really easy to get caught up in the social aspect of college and to forget that the real reason you are here is to get a degree. Sometimes you have to stay in and study in the library on Tuesday so that you can go out on the weekend without having to worry about your History homework. Trust me, you might sit there in the library and refresh your Snapchat story every 30 seconds, but it is worth it in the end.

Get involved.

There are so many organizations/clubs around your campus. I joined a Greek Organization my first semester, and it was the best decision I've ever made. You don't have to join a Greek organization to get involved. Join your school's Habitat for Humanity club, French Club, The Literary Magazine, etc. Through these organizations you get involved in your campus while also meeting amazing new people that will always be there for you.

Professors don't bite..

Before college, I was told that professors are scary people who won't care about you. After my first semester, I can't say enough how much I loved my professors. Going to office hours is one of the most beneficial things that you can do as a college student. By showing professors that you don't understand what they are teaching, they see that you care. Their job is to help you succeed and to clarify everything that you don't understand. They are an email or an office hour away because they want to help you, so take advantage of it.

Never leave your dorm without your phone charger.

Like many college students, I always have my phone in my hand. You never know how long you are going to be in the library for, or when you are going to need a call to Jimmy Johns when you are hungry. By having your phone charger with you, you'll never have to panic about your phone dying or having to find someone with a charger.

Being friends with your roommate is great.

When I signed up for a roommate over the summer, I picked to have a random roommate. I was terrified at first, but my roommate and I are great friends. They are there for you when you want someone to eat pizza with you on your kitchen floor. They help you pick an outfit when you literally have tried on everything in your closet, they are a shoulder to cry on when you are sad, and they are there to help you kill that spider that is in your living room.

Mistakes happen, but it's okay.

It's your first semester of college; you don't need to have everything figured out. Mistakes will happen, but you learn from those mistakes. You learn that you should drink on a full stomach, that forgetting to turn your homework once is okay because there are many more, and that that one guy that you flirted with a little too hard last night isn't the "one." Your freshman is year is the year for you to make mistakes, so embrace it.

Growing up is weird.

I learned this point right away. It's weird going from your parents cooking your meals and being there to do things for you that you are too scared to do to having to do your own laundry and having to figure out how to not burn cookies. It's weird realizing that you are growing up, but that is what college is for. You learn how to live on your own and to do things on your own that will make you a better person. Becoming an adult is fun and so is growing up, but it takes a little getting used in the beginning.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
