This summer, after working as a cashier two summers in a row, I had my first "real job" as a legal assistant intern. I learned so much from this experience -- and not all what I'd been expecting to learn. Here are some of the things my job taught me.
1. Never assume your boss has it easier than you
I came into work envisioning my lawyer boss's job requirements to be: some paperwork, meeting with clients, going to court, and signing things. I was shocked when I learned that he also had to stay in contact with clients' families, handle bank accounts, talk with medical providers, drive around mailing bills, and so much more. And here I was copying files.
2. Coffee is a must
You will get tired so quickly. It is mentally demanding working in an office. No more drifting off into space as you wipe down tables - your mind is constantly at work, sometimes overexerting yourself if you're already exhausted (and, of course, you stayed up all night watching Riverdale so you are).
3. Use your whole lunch break!
That is your time to break away from the mental stress of your job. Don't try to get a "head start" on other work unless you're already behind.
4. Listen to the people you work with
I came into the job expecting 8 hours a day sitting and filing by myself. I worked with a legal assistant, but I figured we would just do our work and never talk to each other. I was so wrong. We laughed and joked frequently as we worked and really opened up to each other. She became my confidant over the summer and I miss talking with her every day. If I had been solely focused on my work and refused to open up, we would have never become friends.
5. You are not your work
It's easy to become wrapped up in your day job when your life depends on it. But your sanity rests on the time out of work: read a book. Watch a movie, see a play, go to a party with your friends. Don't let work consume your life, especially at such a young age.
