I'd like to think there is an art to working in retail. For those of you who have also worked or are currently working in retail, here's a list of ten things I know you can agree we wish customers would sometimes understand before they walk into our store.
1. We have probably been standing all day.
Most clothing stores or retail stores in general do not allow their clerks to sit behind the desk, or even sit at all. Remember that as you complain about how much your feet hurt or how tired you are in a retail store.
2. We don’t choose the prices.
We don't make the prices of the clothes, so don't yell at us when something is expensive.
3. Were not stalking you, just trying to help.
Ma'am, I am following you around this store because I am trying to be a good sales associate and this is my job, not creepily reading your texts over your shoulder or listening to your phone conversations. Relax.
4. It's actually beneficial for us to help you shop.
We know the store and see people try on the merchandise everyday, trust our opinions.
5. We really do know where everything is and what would look good on you.
We have stared at everything in this store for days on end, trust us when we give you options that we think would look great on you.
6. We spend a lot of time organizing the store.
You would be surprised how much time we spend fixing the hangers and making sure that the clothing is in size order.
7. We're here to help.
Don't be mean to us just because we're trying to help you.
8. We have developed a hate for steamers.
We spend countless hours steaming the clothes. I've lost count on how many times I've burnt myself with that thing.
9. Most the time, we have tried everything on in the store.
I personally loved the clothing when I worked in retail, so trust me when I say I know how every article of clothing feels on.
10. Being mean to us is not the answer to not finding something that fits you.
Not everyone has the same body type and not every article of clothing will fit everyone. Do not take it out on the sales clerk when something doesn't fit just right. We didn't sew the clothes.
