What It's Like To Be A "Newsie"

Working as a news station intern has been the time of my life.

What It's Like To Be A "Newsie"

Being a Mass Communications major, there are many options for careers out there. But the one part I have always been interested in is news. I like the fast-paced nature of the newsroom and how journalists investigate stories and come to conclusions.

Picking a place to intern for college credit wasn't too hard for me—a news station is where I wanted to be. Working at a news station means there are many deadlines and you have to get used to working under pressure. I have learned that I work well under the immense pressure in this type of environment.

I spent my first day at the station meeting everyone I could and becoming friends with all the reporters, anchors, producers, meteorologists and especially the editors, since that is where my passion lies.

The second day on the job, I was able to accompany a reporter to a live shot for a story. To see everything I have learned in college being done in a real professional environment was such a thrill for me.

I can't be that intern who sits all day and does nothing and is only there just because they have to be. I've heard from many people who spent all day at the desk and didn't ask to go on live shoots or interviews. Being a video editor, that's what I really want to focus on, but at the same time, I want to try everything. Whether that is reporting, producing, being a photographer or being an editor. I see this as a chance for me to shine and to prove to everyone at the station that I can keep up with the big dogs.

The one thing I really love about being at the station is that I am not treated like an intern. I'm not looked down upon. I don't do coffee runs and file reports. I actually get treated like I am part of the team. I go on news stories, I edit newscasts, and I am able to shoot footage for the news as well. I am treated as if I am a new hire and not as an intern.

I have made so many new friends at the station. One of my closest friends is the 11 a.m. anchor! I am also good friends with a few of the reporters, producers, editors and meteorologists. Being friends with those people has its perks, and for an excitable guy like myself, its amazing to see how they all work. I soak it all in like a fresh sponge.

One of the producers actually said to me, "You have done more in three weeks than most people do during their entire internship," which was very good to hear. Hearing from seasoned professionals that they like that I have such a passion for the industry is also something I can't get tired of. Its nice to be respected for something I love to do.

People always ask me, "Do you like this internship more than than working at Disney World?" and, without a doubt, the answer is always yes! I feel like I belong with the news station. My goal is to work for them some day. The past few weeks have been some of the best times of my life, and I hope it continues to be that way.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
