What It's Like To Gain A New, Tiny Family Member

You can't stop falling in love with them

Gaining a family member can induce a lot of different emotions in people, and sometimes they’re not always pleasant. For example, if your dad just married that girlfriend you really did not like, or your new mother-in-law tries to make your life difficult. But nobody can be disappointed when a new baby arrives. This is a bit what the process looks like when you find out.

1. You get the text or call

You’re just going about your life when you get a text message or phone call from someone in your family telling you they’re pregnant. You can’t believe it, an excited squeal escapes from your mouth and anybody around you wonders what in the world is going on.

2. You have to tell all of your friends

As soon as you get the news, so do all your friends. Chances are they know or know of, the family member who’s having the baby and they are almost as excited as you are. Almost.

3. The couple announces the gender of their baby

Whether they have a gender reveal party or they post on social media the gender of their baby, the excitement is still the same. It doesn’t really matter if the baby is a girl or a boy, you know you’re going to help in spoiling them endlessly.

4. Then comes a name

At this point, the parents have probably spent months deciding between names. It’s a tricky process, to say the least. One might not like the name their partner picked out, or maybe they knew someone in school with that name so it’s out. But whatever they decide, you’re pretty sure it’s going to suit the baby perfectly.

5. And a due date

Finally, there’s a date. Sure, it’s a while in the future but it gives you an almost definite day to be looking forward to. Mark your calendars, everybody, there’s going to be a new kid in town.

6. Baby shower!

Isn’t this one of the most exciting parts? You get to see so many people you haven’t seen in ages and watch Mommy-to-be open up what seems like a hundred presents that are all automatically cute just because they’re tiny. Even plain white socks, if it’s baby related it’s cute. Oh, and there will be lots of children's books.

7. All. That. Waiting.

This is the most miserable part for probably everyone involved. You have nothing to do now but wait literally months until the baby arrives. It’s hard to be patient with all that anticipation in the air, the months slowly pass by one by one until…

8. They’re here!

Ladies and gents it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The new baby is here and cuter than ever. A text or call goes out to close family and friends, probably sent by the new dad or the new grandparents. Everyone’s phones blow up but no one cares about anything except the family member.

9. Getting to visit

As if getting the news wasn’t enough, getting to actually see the baby and the new parents is even better. You sanitize before going into the hospital room and greeting everybody. The whole room is quiet, an air of awe and amazement floating around and everyone is trying not to wake the sleeping baby. Getting to hold your new cousin is a feeling that can’t be described. They feel so tiny and precious in your arms, you don’t want to let go for awhile.

10. Pictures everywhere

After you leave and the new mommy feels a bit better and more rested, there are pictures on every social media platform. Everyone has to know just how cute this baby is and that they have finally arrived. But even before the pictures are posted you know that you, and everyone else, already loves this new addition to the family.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
