What It's Like Being An Only Child

Growing up as only child has its pros and cons, you hear every joke in the book while being able to have a close connection with your family that someone with siblings will ever experience. Even though I do find myself wondering what it would be like living life with sibling I have come to terms that the only child life is my lifestyle and what you’re about to read is as real as it gets. I created a list mixed with the benefits and the not so beneficial reasons as to why being an only child is pretty rad.

1. You are extremely spoiled.

I put this as the first one because I am pretty sure I could be a millionaire at this comment if given a dollar for every time I’ve heard that one. To clear it up, no we do not get special treatment for being the only kid in the household.

2. Your pet is a sibling.

“Where is your sister.” “go pet your sister.” “Your sister loves you.” These are the many lines I hear every day that, even though I should be use to it by now, I still find myself cringing at the fact my parents refer to my dog as my sister. It's as if my parents feel bad for not having more kids so they make up for it by calling our 4-year-old dog and sister of mine.

3. Your life revolves around pictures.

There are pictures of you everywhere! Senior pictures, baby pictures, those horrible school pictures and probably the pictures you post on Facebook that your mom thought was so cute so she printed it out for her own keepsake. When people come over for the first time the pictures on the walls are the dead giveaway you are an only child if they didn’t already know that.

4. You’re close to your parents.

This is probably one of the best feelings in the world. To be able to laugh and have inside jokes and it not be weird to have it just be you and your parents for a movie night or sit-down dinner. Being an only child you have the advantage of having this luxury.

5. Meeting another "only child" is So. Exciting.

It’s an instant friendship a bond like no other. “You’re an only child?” “No way, same!” And then bam! Instant connection.

6. Alone time is forever.

While parents are at work you literally have the house to do whatever. Never have to worry about your siblings coming home. So if you’re wanting to lounge naked all day, sing along to T-Swift in a big t-shirt and underwear or simply just sleep, the house and quiet is all there for you.

7. What’s yours is yours.

This one is probably my favorite part of being an only child, never having to share. I couldn’t imagine having to share a bathroom; I wouldn’t do very well with that. You never have to worry about your little sister stealing your favorite shirt or pair of shorts. You don’t mind spending your money on nice things because you know only you will be touching that item. These are the main topics of living the real life as an only child. There’s so much more to being an only child, but I am sure those who are reading this with siblings are scratching their heads or trying to figure out a way to become an only child (just kidding). While on the other hand the only children are just shaking their heads and probably blushing at how this is seriously our lifestyle.

Peace out,

An only child

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
