What It Means To Be Greek

35

Joining a fraternity or sorority is an experience. It gives off an appeal to the typical college lifestyle. People find friends and make memories by being Greek. But what does it mean to be Greek? Why should you be Greek?

Two simple questions that words cannot answer. Being Greek has endless benefits that once you are apart of, you find out there is no way to describe how great it actually is. Here are a few benefits that Greek Life at Auburn offers.

Brotherhood and Sisterhood

When you join a Greek Organization, you gain friendships that are priceless. Meeting your pledge brothers or sisters for the first time is a special moment. Some of them will be your good friends that you will keep forever. Even the brothers or sisters that are older than you will become some of your very good friends. Choosing a big brother and big sister can create a special relationship to you. The stories that you will be able to tell with these people will not only be awesome, but will make you look like a genius for deciding to go through rush.

T-Shirts

After I first stepped on campus, I saw all these pastel shirts with all kinds of cool designs on them. There were sorority and fraternity shirts everywhere. To turn your wardrobe into these cheap but fancy looking t-shirts is a great feeling. Well lucky for the Greek Community, these shirts are as common as a freshman with a lanyard. After you start meeting people, you get invited to all kinds of socials and formals. Soon enough, you have more t-shirts than you can count. And just think how hard it would be to walk to class without a Greek shirt on.

Connections

Joining Greek Life creates all kinds of connections around campus and the nation. Usually a go to question when first meeting someone in college is asking if they are in a fraternity or sorority. This creates an instant connection because you both have something in common, t-shirts! On the other hand, this connection can create instant friendships. Maybe one day some of these connections will land you that job you have always wanted. Even after you graduate, people that went to different schools will continue to ask if you participated in Greek Life.

The opportunity to be Greek can leave a lifelong mark on your life. It can create new friendships as you continue to live your life.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
