What is ADHD?

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurological disorder which, according to the American Psychiatric Association, affects 5% of all children in the United States. It greatly impairs an individual's ability to control their activity level, leading them to be unable to focus on tasks that are important.

People with this illness are often fidgety and unfocused, resulting in difficulties at school and work. If left untreated it can continue into adulthood where it can result in increased drug abuse or even full-blown personality disorders which may require psychiatric treatment.

What is stimulant therapy?

Stimulant therapy is a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that uses stimulants to improve ADHD symptoms. Stimulant therapy may help adults and children who have ADHD control their behavior and allow them to lead more normal lives.

Common stimulants for the treatment of ADHD

Here is a list of stimulant drugs that may or may not be prescribed to your child depending on their specific health needs. Do not self-medicate using this information because proper assessment by a professional is always required before any prescriptions are filled out. Note that some medications mentioned here will only be helpful for your child under certain circumstances.

Stimulants:

Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) – it is a mild drug that has fewer side effects than others and works well for most patients – both children and adults;

Adderall (mixed amphetamine salts) – this remedy is often prescribed to boost the therapeutic effects of methylphenidate, which has not been sufficiently effective; however, if your child already takes methyl phenidate and they feel like it's not working anymore, you should consult with your doctor instead of adding another medication to the treatment scheme;

Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) – as compared to other ADHD medications, lisdexamfetamine is slow to reach peak levels in the blood and thus can be taken once a day; it also shows good efficacy when used alone;

Ritalin (methylphenidate) – this medication depletes dopamine and adrenaline, which help with symptoms such as irritability and mood swings. The side effects of methylphenidate have been known for a long time, but these symptoms will wear off after some time because your child's body gets used to the drug being in its system.

The following list of people should not take a stimulant drug without first checking with their doctor or neurologist who knows their medical history.

Anyone under the age of 18

Anyone over the age of 60

Pregnant women

Nursing mothers

People who suffer from anxiety disorders, heart problems, hypertension, glaucoma, thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, seizures or migraines (does not include headaches induced by caffeine withdrawal) or anyone with psychosis or bipolar disorder.

The following conditions are not necessarily reasons to keep a person off stimulants. They should be carefully monitored, however by a doctor if the medications are taken:

Kidney disease

Liver disease

High blood pressure (hypertension) or other heart problems

How do they work?

Stimulant therapy work via stimulating the production of certain chemicals in the brain. It is also used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The medication is central nervous system (CNS) stimulants and works by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the synapse as well as exerting its action on serotonin transporters. These neurotransmitters are responsible for improving focus, concentration, mood and behavior. Some stimulants such as Adderall can be addictive without proper treatment and this makes it important that you go through a detoxification process beforehand if you plan to take this drug.

What are some common side effects of stimulant therapy?

1. Insomnia

2. Appetite decrease

3. Weight loss

4. Sialorrhea

5. Tics

6. Psychosis

7. Paranoia

8. Mania

9. Panic attacks

10. Hallucinations

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
