What Happens When You Leave Your Family Behind?

In the end, it's all about family.

You have it easy some days. You head to work or school, you do what is being asked of you. Sometimes your daily routine isn't as smooth as you hope it would be and you desperately wish you had all the love in the world wrapped around you. That is your loved ones' embrace.

If you're like me, then your circle of friends isn't really a circle of friends, more so a triangle. Making plans may seem a bit difficult and you would want to be out and about having a family outing, sharing memories and laughter.

Going out to eat or going to the movies alone isn't anything new for you nor is it weird, you're actually used to it.

If you are in a place for the sake of your future whether it is a job or your education, isn't it hard to share your exciting job news with your family when they are thousands of miles away? A text or a Facetime call can only do so much.

What about being that person who gives out all the leftover graduation tickets to others since you have nobody to give them to?

Also, what is a graduation or birthday party anyway?

References are going to be a headache. I can easily use one of my former bosses as a reference, but I cannot guarantee they will speak of me in such a personal and gratifying way the way one of my family members would.

Holidays won't be as exciting. It would be a miracle to fly out to see family during Thanksgiving or Christmas since airline tickets will be through the roof. So instead I treat each day as a regular one and be thankful for the life that I am living even though if it's not the one I would want to have.

Seeing pictures on social media of your cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., makes you a thousand times more nostalgic and you hope to teleport yourself to that moment to enjoy their company.

Although separation is a tough teacher, it is one that although you will curse in the beginning, it will be the one to reward you with wisdom and other unthinkable gifts. Whether you have been away from your family for years, months, or even days, you will realize that you have become a better and different person.

If you can get away from what is familiar to you, you can go through anything in life, because the one thing that slows us down from reaching for the stars and our utmost desires is our comfort zone. Family brings us comfort, joy, reassurance, and a hope to be better in everything that we do.

Having the chance to visit my loved ones not only makes me realize that I love them so much but it also reminds me of the love that they have for me. And who doesn't like to be reminded of how much someone loves them?

Seeing them puts everything into perspective, and makes me see that life is too short to hold anything against somebody and that with all the disagreements and disputes we may have, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I thank separation for teaching me to appreciate what I have and all the unwanted moments that I experience because I wouldn't grow as a person and my love for those who share my blood wouldn't be as robust.

I am away from my loved ones in order to transform into a better human, to learn, to thrive, to cry, to laugh, to break, to allow myself to enjoy things and learn from outside my comfort zone. One day I will come to a point in life where all my hard work and persistence will pay off and I can share everything that I have gained with everyone I love.

I promise I'll be home soon.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
