"What happened?" Sasha asked rushing over to me.
"She was attacked by one of the janitors," Trevor said.
"What?" Justin asked, standing up and walking over towards us.
"Whatever that sound was that killed everyone did something to Mrs. Waters," Trevor explained to them. Everyone stared at him.
"But what about the others, Trevor? We are surrounded by 200 plus of those things right now,” Aaron said.
“He’s right, Trevor. We are surrounded by over 200 right now. We may all be the children of hunters, soldiers, and survivalists, but we can not take on an army,” Meagan said with a huge bit of fear in her voice. Just like that everyone began fighting. Everyone was shouting at one another. I sat there in silence. Finally it dawned on me.
“SHUT UP!” I yelled standing up. Everyone stopped and looked at me. “Meagan is right. We are all the children of some of the toughest people.” All I got were confused faces. “It is because of this reason we will all be able to pull together,” I said.
“What do you suggest, Soph?” Justin asked.
“Town is clearly not a safe place for us to be. We need to leave town,” I answered.
“But we have nowhere to go. Plus our parents may come looking for us and we won’t be here,” Sasha said, frustrated. I only smiled.
“You want us to go to the cabin, don’t you?” Trevor asked. Max’s eyes opened wide.
“Yes, that where I want us to go,” I aid with a smile.
“Soph, we can’t. It is miles into the woods, and then it is halfway up a cliff. Dad was the only one who got us there,” Max said in a worried tone.
“Max, I know the way. Plus it is the safest place we have. It is miles out of town and our cabin is big enough for all of us. What do you say guys?” I asked.
“I don’t know. What if we get lost, and why haven’t you ever mentioned this cabin to the rest of us before?” Sasha asked.
“I haven’t mentioned it because there was no need to. My dad only ever took the three of us. He for some reason didn’t want a bunch of people to know where it was,” I answered.
“I say go for it. It’s better than waiting around for us to find out if there are more people like Mrs. Waters,” Aaron said.
“I’m still unsure, but I’m in,” Sasha replied. With Sasha’s agreement everyone else soon followed suit. We made plans to leave in the morning and all of us went to sleep. My sleep was restless and by the several times I woke up that night so was everyone else’s.
Aaron was the first one to wake. He woke everyone up military style with a loud clapping of his hands. “Ok, so before we leave we need to get some supplies, and my best guess is that we need to get camping stuff,” Trevor said.
“Why don’t we go down to the Depot?” Max asked.
“Hey, good idea they have everything we need there,” I said then it dawned on me. “Guys, space isn’t the problem with the supplies there a small storage space by the cabin, plus we can always do trees and such, the problem is getting it there. We would have to make the hike out of town several times to get everything,” I said with an already exhausted tone.
“Technically we just can’t use the trucks that Aaron and I have. We can’t use other types of vehicles though,” Trevor said.
“Hey, isn’t the Depot right next to that off-roading vehicle dealer?” Justin asked.
“Yes, it is. If we grab a few of those we can take less trips and haul more,” Trevor replied.
“Then it’s settled. Once we finish with everything we need here let’s head over to the depot,” I said. Everyone ate some cereal from the lunchroom, then we all loaded up into Aaron and Trevor’s trucks. Everyone saw what the town looked like and were silent. Sasha had tears running down her face when I looked back at her. We had just passed her house, and it was black inside. It took us an hour to reach the Depot.
When we got inside we were surprised to find that it was surprisingly empty all except for Chuck who was dead bent over the counter. Everyone separated to find themselves clothes, food, weapons, and anything else that might come in handy.
“Hey, let’s take all of the guns and ammunition,” Aaron said.
“No, leave three of each gun and two boxes of bullets for each. This way anyone else who might still be alive can have a chance,” Trevor said stopping him. He shook his head and put back two rifles, a shotgun, and three pistols. On the far side of the weapons counter I spotted an amazing pistol still left in the case. Aaron probably left it because it was locked. I took the stuffed fish from the wall backed up and threw it towards the glass. It shattered with a loud smash. When I uncovered my face and walked over to grab the gun everyone was looking at me with none too happy face.
“Really Sophiene?” Meagan asked.
“Yeah, really. Do you see this gun?” I asked holding it up. They all shook their heads and Max and Trevor just laughed. I took the holster for it out of the case as well and strapped it around my waist. With my new gun attached I kept on browsing.
It took everyone a couple of hours to grab everything we needed. Justin and Aaron used some of the skills their Military fathers taught them and broke into the off-roading shop next door. They come back with keys to four UTVs. “We got four of them because there are seven of us, and we need all of the room we can get, plus it’s always good to have escape vehicles,” Justin said throwing me a pair of keys.
“We aren’t thieves. We don’t need to escape anyone,” Sasha said in a mocking tone.
“Hey, you never know,” Aaron said.
