10 Things God Has Taught Me Within the Past Year

For the past few years, I've spent every single day trying to become closer to God. However, this past year I have felt closer to God then I had ever felt before, and I feel as if God helped me realize some important things in my life. Below, I want to share the 10 most important things that God has taught me or that he has helped me come to terms with this year. Hopefully, this can help give you some comfort and guidance when it comes to your relationship with God.

You don’t have 100% control over your life

While there are some things that you as a person do have control over, there are so many things outside of your own life that you won't always be able to control. From obvious things like the weather and what color the sky is to the more not-so-obvious things like someone else's words or actions. We can never be in full control of our lives because God doesn't want us to have that type of workload on us. It may seem unfair, but it is in our best interest.

This is something that I had always had trouble accepting for the longest time. I hated not being in control of everything, and it gave me so much anxiety to not have more control of my life. But in the Bible, specifically Revelation 1:17, it says the following: "Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last". Notice how he (God) first said the words "do not be afraid"? God's telling us to not be afraid over not having control of everything, because he's controlling everything else, and to me that brings so much comfort.

God always has your back no matter what

This is something that should be obvious from the start, but from time to time it seems that everyone needs this reminder in life, including me. For me, there have been many times where it seems like God isn't there. There have been many nights; especially recently, where I have cried while praying because I had thought that God wasn't with me. But one night; very recently, I had some alone time in my room, so I grabbed my Bible and held it super close to me, hoping and praying that I could get some type of connection with God. It was during that time when I suddenly felt something. While I can't exactly describe what I felt, the best way to explain it was that it felt like God was physically comforting me. In Deuteronomy 38:8, it states that "the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged". God will always be with you, and you should never be afraid that he'll leave your side, and you should never feel discouraged if you don't feel that's he's with you at first.

God is always listening to you, and will bring comfort when you need it most.

Similar to the previous point, sometimes we all need a reminder that God is listening to us and is constantly hearing our prayers. I know first hand how it feels to think that God isn't listening to us when we need him most. I've been through the pain and the tears feeling so alone and distant from God, but at the end of the day God was always still listening to me, even when I thought he wasn't. Sometimes, what you pray for won't come to you right away, and while that sucks, it doesn't mean he isn't listening. Jeremiah 29:12-13 says that "Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart". God is always prepared to listen to us, because his hopes are that you will come talk to him.

God will show people's true colors to you

This point was actually one of the first points that inspired me to write this article in the first place. I recently went through a situation in life where God had shown me an ex-friends true colors, and because of that it allowed me to let go of someone who was toxic to me. At first, it was painful to lose someone who I thought would always be there for me. But after some time, I realize that God was looking out for me the entire time, and he no longer wanted me to be hurt by someone. If someone is ever removed from your life, it's because God is telling you that it's just not meant to be and you deserve much better in life. God will show you who the right people are in your life, and he will make sure that they stay in your life for as long as they possibly can.

Forgiveness is a huge part of life

Something that I've actually talked a lot about before is forgiveness. If you want to heal in life, and if you want to live the rest of your life in peace, you will have to learn to forgive others for their actions. This past year, I've had some things done to me, and at first I wanted to hold grudges. But after doing that for a while I realized how pointless it became, and how I never felt truly better. With forgiveness however, I could be at peace with myself, knowing that I've forgiven someone. Again, God forgives us for all of our wrongdoings, and others may forgive you for your actions too. Forgiveness can usually do more good than harm for yourself.

There’s always a light at the end of every dark tunnel

Life is never easy, in fact, sometimes life can just be completely dark. It can feel like you're endlessly walking through a dark tunnel that you will never get out of. Whether you just feel sad, anxious, lonely, etc., there will always be a time where it feels like the sun will literally never shine again. But because God is so great, he will always shine the light for us at some point, and will lead us to the end of the tunnel. God will always guide you in the right direction in life, even if you feel lost or hopeless to the point where you just want to give up. God never gives up on anyone, no matter how far into the darkness they have gone. He will always shine light for anyone.

 You are never truly alone

This has always been one of the hardest things for me to come to terms with personally. Even though I am happy as an independent person, I can get a little lonely from time to time. Sometimes, it can even feel as if I'll truly be alone for the rest of my life. But with God, that is never the case. God is always here with you, even though he may not be standing right next to you. When you wake up, he's with you. When you go to work/school, he's there. When you're all alone, crying, and praying to God for a miracle, he's right there holding you in his arms. The Bible states in Joshua 1:9 to "be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone. '' When I know that God is always holding my hand wherever I go, I am no longer afraid that I am alone.

God can’t completely fix or change you as a person

Something that I used to always pray to God for was for him to change me. I used to always ask him why he made me the way I am, and why couldn't he have made me into the person I actually dreamed of being. I would use to cry and pray for nights hoping that I'd wake up the next morning and be someone new. However, at some point I had to realize that if God wanted me to be someone different, he would have made me as someone different. God loves us for who we are, and he is proud of the way he creates us. He loves us for the way we look and for the way we live our lives. God would not want to fix something that is not already broken, so why should he have to? Love yourself for who you are because that is the way God loves you.

God can however, fix a broken heart

Even though God can't fix everything about you, he can fix a heart that's hurting. I find it really comforting that God will always be able to help us when we are hurting, whether it's physically or emotionally. I tend to notice more often than not that God always comes to our refuge when we're in need of emotional healing. I feel that now I can always go to God if I'm feeling sad or scared or anything along those lines because God wants us to trust him. In the Bible it says that "He heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds" (Psalm 147:2), which is again saying that God always heals us no matter what we're going through. God's power to heal is always bigger and stronger than anything you could ever imagine.

God will always have bigger and better plans for you

I put this point last because I feel that it's the most important thing I have learned within this past year. There's always going to be times where you feel like you aren't where you want to be in life, or maybe you just want something better in your life right now. Even though it can be super easy to forget, we always have to remember that God is creating a better path for us each and every day. God hears us when we tell him that we aren't happy with our current situation, and because of that he always has a plan for us. Those plans may not come today, and they may not even come tomorrow, but at some point God will show us what he's been working on for us. Even in the Bible, Jeremiah 29:11 states that "For I know the plans I have for you, declared the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". No matter how easy it is to think that God isn't with us or that he isn't looking out for us, we should always be patient with him because his plans are always bigger than our hopes and dreams

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
