What I Found In Sororities As A Non-Greek Student

Do we really see sororities for what they are?

What I Found In Sororities As A Non-Greek Student

This piece is super weird for me to write -- anyone who knew me in high school knows that I used to have a really hard time with girls. So. Much. Drama. (Much of it my own fault but, hey, ya' live and ya' learn). Thus, when college was approaching, I had absolutely no interest in Greek life, which is a huge part of why I chose to attend Seattle U and shed no tears when I found out it didn't have a Greek system. However, things have changed. My best friend joined a sorority at another university during our sophomore year and she's loved almost every minute of it, no matter how much she misses having her own room and a queen size bed. She started inviting me on her Grab-a-Dates (GADs) as her date and I started coming by the house for get togethers, and that's when everything started to change for me. Sororities, and Greek life in general, get a pretty bad rap, so I'm here to tell you what I've found from personal experience.

They actually love each other.

In movies, sororities are always painted to look totally cliché -- like everyone stabs everyone in the back, they're all catty, all very stuck up, etc. Movies couldn't be more wrong. These girls genuinely love and respect each other. These girls genuinely care to ask how each other is doing -- they keep tabs on each others' love lives, struggles and accomplishments in school and life outside of the sorority. Not only that, but they do the same with whoever their sisters bring to the sorority -- they make an effort to get to know each others' parents, significant others and friends. Every time I step foot in their sorority, these girls are asking me how work or school is, what I've been up to, and how I'm feeling about life and they genuinely want to know. These girls have a love much deeper than the surface-level love painted in movies and TV shows.

These girls aren't all the same.

In my head, I used to look at sororities and imagine that this was where the popular girls go. I had images of blonde girls with super long hair, decked out in pink, with super bubbly yet mean-girl like personalities just flowing out the door, like a bunch of copies of Regina George. What I've found is that these girls don't all look the same, not even close. They all have distinctly different styles and looks -- from super preppy girls to super bohemian and decked out in all black (shoutout to my best friend, I'm looking at you). Not only when it comes to appearances, but also when it comes to interests. There are girls that are into music, into fashion, into diet and health and literally anything else you could think of. Even though they're all different, they all mesh and thrive off of each other's different passions and interests, and it's really cool to see.

They're brilliant.

Greek Life appears to be a place where all you do is party and socialize, and yes they do a lot of that, but when they're not partying, sororities and fraternities alike are networking, studying in the library or in their study rooms in their house, and hosting events for charity. Sororities are a really great place to make connections for your career. My best friend found a really amazing internship opportunity in the Construction Management major through a sorority sister, and many of the girls found job opportunities through their sorority sisters as well. These girls are totally brilliant and work really hard to maintain a careful balance of socializing and building themselves a strong career. It's not all fun and games like it may seem.

I'm sure as I continue hanging out with these girls I'll learn so much more about them but, truly -- sororities and Greek life in general are not painted to be the amazing place for community that they are. Every time I go to events with them, their first question is "what house are you in?" and I always say, "I don't even go here!" (shoutout to Damien from "Mean Girls") and they accept me as if I'm an honorary sorority sister nonetheless.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.

What's up Asshat,

I've composed a list of things that I wish upon you, and they're harsh and cruel. These things are things that I wouldn't wish upon my worst of enemies, not even that Starbuck's barista who always screws up my order, not even him. You fall into a whole other category of hate. You surpass Starbucks barista. Congratulations, I'm actually a pretty nice person, making you worthy of every single bit of torture I wish upon you. What are these things I wish upon you you might ask?
