With the New Year Eve's celebrations coming to a close and 2017 starting in full swing, it's time to finally talk about the elephant in the room: Mariah Carey at the Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve celebration.
But let's look at this from the stand point of an audience member who watched the same train wreck the rest of America watched and the stand point of a singer. And let's start from the beginning.
"Auld Lang Syne." The CLASSIC New Year's Eve song. When she started this, I was so excited. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I thought she was doing so well and then I noticed: lip syncing. Lip-syncing with your friends and family? Fun. A 5-time grammy award winner lip syncing at the largest event of the year? Oh please, I hope she doesn't. But she was.
A FIVE time... let me repeat FIVE TIME GRAMMY AWARD WINNER, the highest of honors in the music business, lip syncing the song. And we all know she is so much better than that. Mariah Carey definitely did not need to lip sync these songs (and yes, she was supposed to lip sync all of them) and in the end, that was the thing that screwed her over.
Throughout the first one of her own songs, Carey tried to sing along with some of the lyrics and I thought maybe she would be able to pull through, but sadly that was not the case. Carey claimed that the monitors were off and that she would not be able to hear herself if she sang, but being a singer who sings in front of thousands every summer at rodeo's with no monitors, no ear pieces, in the middle of a dusty arena, with the wind blowing against my sound and the competitors all getting ready to ride, I personally cannot see how that was such a big issue for her. And like I said, that is just for me personally, but maybe that just shows that either 1. she has gotten way too used to studio life and being able to tweak and critique every note and run or 2. she was never built for this type of singing. Which once again, five time Grammy award winner... the second one is hard for me to really believe.
The part for me about the first song that just got me was that you could hear those high pitched notes that Carey is known for in the background with the tape that she was supposed to be lip syncing with. Do I need to state my favorite fact about her again? Five times... five times!!
As the song continues, it just completely fell apart. Between the awkward interactions with the audience and the miscommunication between the dancers, it really took a turn for a worst towards the end. It looked almost as if nothing was ever rehearsed for Carey and her dancers. The "lifts" were awkward and I was just waiting for her to stumble off her heels and break an ankle. It just looked as if she really had nothing planned or rehearsed before hand and that she wanted to just go out there and "wing it."
The first song went as best as it really could have. Carey tried to explain what was happening, kept asking for the monitors to be turned on, and was trying to keep a brave face, but overall, the interactions were awkward and her level of being uncomfortable was through the roof. And in the end she commented on how she was trying to be a good sport and I agree, she was being a good one.
I had hope for the second song... I really did. But once again lip syncing. This one was sadly worst because the entire song was supposed to be lip synced instead of just partially like before. At least some music was playing and the audience got something (I feel terrible for the people who waited hours to see her and saw this instead) out of it, but watching it from home made it worst. Not only could you see Carey not syncing with some lyrics, but you could also hear her singing under some of the lyrics. As a singer, if you are required to lip sync, everyone knows the best way to do that is to sing the song along very softly so it looks more natural. But if Carey knew she was going to do that, she should have at least had the mic turned off so we didn't have to hear two voices off of each other by just half a beat or so.
If there is anything a singer can learn from this act, it's to not lip sync. Mariah Carey is one of the most talented singers of our time. If she was asked to do the show and accepted and really thought she needed to lip sync the whole time, then she should not have taken the job in the first place. Along with that, Carey also showed to never become just a studio singer. Someone who relies solely on the monitors and the auto tune in order to get a good run of a song. No one expects people to be perfect, especially when they are performing at such a large event. But we definitely do expect more from a 5 time Grammy winner, even if she does think she deserves a holiday.
But hey, in the end, it's Mariah Carey. She handled it like a champ and hopefully she has learned her lesson. Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2017, Mariah?
