Sunday, March 29 was a dark day for all fans of the hit AMC show The Walking Dead. The season five finale aired and we were left without our beloved show until it returns this fall. As of writing this, I have not seen the finale, but I read the synopsis on The Spoiling Dead Facebook page. Read no further if you do not want spoilers.
Bad things happen, as they do during the zombie apocalypse, but all is well! As well as it can be. No one on Team Family died, and after the rest of season five (I'm still not over Tyreese and refuse to believe Beth is dead. Look at the signs, people) that's a win in my books. Regardless, what's a fandom to do without its show to obsess over? I have compiled a list of things to do after The Walking Dead season five finale.
1. Cry. It's not weird. It's normal. Sometimes, the only way to process that we won't see Team Family until the fall is with tears.
2. Overanalyze. Everything. The writers know what they are doing. There are little secrets (re-watch season five and look at the times on all the clocks) and so much richness in every season and episode. Look up the season five mirror theory to really have your mind blown.
3. Get ready for Fear the Walking Dead. There is no official premier date for the LA-based spin-off show, but rumor has it it' wil air during the hiatus. It will be set in the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse, so we finally get to see what happened while Rick was in a coma.
4. Listen to the music. It really is beautiful. Whoever scores the show knows exactly what they're doing. They sell official soundtracks, but they don't have every single song on them. Or, you can do what my step-sister did and watch every single episode, Shazam every single song, and get them (she's very dedicated).
5. Search The Walking Dead tag on Tumblr. And whichever other show-related tags you can think of. Bethyl. Rickyl. Richonne. Then refer to number one, above, and cry some more.
6. Re-watch all five seasons. You may have missed something. And even if you didn't, you need to see your favorites characters faces because you may be having some serious separation anxiety symptoms.
7. Have ridiculously long and in-depth discussions about which character you would be and why. Are you the strong, wounded warrior like Daryl? The reluctant Ricktator? The badass like Carol? The silent, fierce Michonne? Loving and sweet, but strong Beth? It's a discussion that can take a very long time because eventually you'll have categorized everyone in your life, even the cute guy that just delivered pizza.
8. Create a shrine. No shame.
9. Reenact iconic scenes with the action figures. You don't even need friends for this one! Just sit in the dark, the show playing softly in the background as you hunch over plastic dolls.
10. Learn your favorite characters weapon of choice. It's only a realistic experience if you are running around the woods in clothes that look like they came from Free People or Urban Outfitters with a crossbow or katana.
11. Practice your Rick voice. The only proper way to quote The Walking Dead is in the imitated voice of your preferred character. Start with: "we don't kill the living" in your best Rick Grimes voice.
12. Coral. If you are a fan of the show, that's all I really have to say. It's a good break between fits of crying.
13. Obsessively follow all the actors on every social media platform in the hopes of scraps of spoilers from season six.
14. Listen to Emily Kinney's entire album on repeat. Even if you are not a fan of her type of music, it's worth it if you are a fan of Beth Greene. Fun fact: she filmed her video for "Rockstar" in the warehouse where Sasha goes when she leaves Bob because he wants to go after Maggie in S4 E13 "Alone."
15. Perfect your walker look. But. first, let me take a selfie.
16. Get ready for season six! Whether you are having a huge party, or sitting in the dark of your living room by yourself under a blanket because you can't handle your emotions, it's never too early to prepare for next season!
Hiatus is always horrible, but at least we have Fear the Walking Dead to get us through the worst of it.
