Usually, when the thought of driverless cars comes to mind, you may worry about your freedom to drive and the limitations that driverless cars may pose for you. However, according to Business Insider, the number of driverless cars on the streets is projected to reach 10 million by the year 2020. A world of driverless cars seems inevitable, so you'd better warm up to the idea if you haven't already. Here are some benefits of driverless cars that may not have crossed your mind.
No more stop signs or traffic lights
Connected driving will eliminate the need for traffic to come to a complete stop at intersections. The cars would communicate to each other exactly how fast they are going, and the speeds would adjust to prevent any collision. The result would look something like this:
Efficiency - save the earth!
Starting and stopping your car is incredibly inefficient because of the inconsistent travel times and changes in momentum. Connected driving would optimize your route and prevent any congestion on the road.
No human error
Accidents are caused by being careless, forgetting to check a blind spot, and having slow reaction times. Handing over the keys to an automated vehicle will eliminate these human factors. (And if driverless cars won't need keys, you don't have to worry about another human factor: losing the keys in the first place!) Further, thousands of people are killed from an instance of drunk driving. Driverless cars are clearly the safe option.
Eliminate restrictions on driver’s license
In America, people under the age of 16 cannot hold a driver’s license. Sometimes, the elderly will have their license revoked. Because of these restrictions, people are often limited in where they can go and what they can do.
Save money
Gas prices are steadily going up, but with the optimization and efficiency of driverless cars, you'll use less gas with every ride you go on! Not only do you help the environment, you're adding to your wallet in the long run.
Or... wait for the future
Maybe someday cars will fly, and traffic will be a thing of the past. The sky's the limit! Until then, driverless cars are sure to make their appearance first.
