In high school, I was a competitive cheerleader on the varsity level. I was on the modified team in middle school, and participated in the clinics starting in the third grade. I was a member of this sport for over ten years and learned quite a few things during my time as a cheerleader.
I think it's safe to say that anyone who was or is a competitive cheerleader has learned these things too:
1. You don't 'play' this sport. You eat, breathe and sleep this sport.
Whether it's early morning competitions or late night practices, long weekends or stand still football games, you're in.
2. We are not bionic
We break bones, sprain limbs, knock heads and eat mat but it's worth it.
3. You're gonna drop mad $$ on bows you'll never wear
Ask me when was the last time I wore my neon lime green cheetah bow!
4. Competition makes you stronger
There are the teams you can beat, there are the teams you're competing with and then there are the teams you learn from.
5. You'll create a family within your team.
When you spend everyday with the same people it's pretty hard not to love them.
6. Hitting your routine is quite possibly the BEST feeling in the world
Your pride goes through the roof.
7. Your coach(es) have your best interest at heart... even when it doesn't feel like it
Even when they're yelling, or they don't put you where you want to be.
8. You can never have too much hairspray, too many bobbies or enough Nike spandex
"Is this poof high enough? Or are we doing braids?"
9. Hard work pays off.
If you put in the work, you'll see results.
10. Not only are you going to miss this, but you're never going to forget it
Competing as a varsity cheerleader is something I will forever be grateful for and never forget.
