In high school, I was a fly on the wall. I didn't go out much or interact with those outside my clique. I was very to myself as many people say. I was friends with the band, orchestra, and choir kids as well as the lesser known kids. But, that was my home. I felt welcomed. More so by my choir class.
Most of us knew each other from elementary and middle school but some I didn't meet until my junior year of high school. The South County High School choir program was deemed my safe space and an outlet outside of my core classes. It was a place that I learned so much from. I grew as a person all because of the lessons I was taught through choir. Here are just a few of the amazing things I learned from being in the choir.
1. Leadership
I was given the role of section leader for my 11th and 12th-grade years and absolutely loved it. It gave me the opportunity to be a role model for my section and to keep my section on the right path. When things didn't go well I learned how to be firm and assertive in my voice. Then I would take the right action to ensure that my section was doing their job.
2. Confidence
Choir gave me a better self-appreciation for who I am. It was a place I could step outside my shell and be proud of being a person who was a little different. I didn't have to be anyone else but myself and I truly appreciate the atmosphere it presented for me.
3. Happiness
From my choir, I gained more than just myself. I always left with a smile. Never with a frown upon my face. It gave me a sense of hope for the future and everything in between. I never wanted to let go of the warm feeling I had been given.
Choir gave me everything I needed to be better and do great things. As I graduated high school and sang our last song together in my cap and gown, I was thankful for all it had given me. And with that, I went into college to peruse my goals. It was the best four years I ever had.
