We’ve all had those late nights when we’re all alone and the only company we have is the bass and melody of our music. In our times of need, music serves as our shoulder to cry on, that best friend to chill with, and that one person to have a heart to heart with all night. The words that we hear through the speakers of the Beats speak volumes to our defeat as we fall asleep to that beat that speaks. All of our answers lie within those melodies that artists have created for us. Yet, we cannot take that same advice that our loved ones have given us over and over again because that is what we do not want to hear. We nod our heads and say we understand when deep down that advice went in one ear and out the other.
Music can often symbolize characteristics of people as well as elucidate where a person is in their life. There are times when we do not have the words to express our thoughts or feelings but that one song that has been on repeat 24/7 has taken the words out of our mouths and expressed them for us. That song not only helps us heal or serves as a backbone for us but it gives people insights on how we think and feel. The story that a song or album tells allows us to see a different side of an artist that leads us to either love or dislike them and reveals a side of us that we may not like to show other people.
As a writer, music has been there every step of the way. It allows my thoughts to flow smoothly and my words to be transcribed easier than it would if I were sitting in silence. I listen to music every day and often times to the same albums depending on my mood but, when I get in the zone I start to interpret those lyrics differently and that is when new inspirations arise. When I write I prefer to listen to R&B or soul music because it puts me in this tranquil vibe that I enjoy being in alone. I feel untouchable and free when I get into that vibe which every writer and person has of their own.
Recently, there has been several game-changers in the music industry, some who may be questionable to others and praised by most. Everyone has their top five artists who they feel as though have been prominent in specific genres and continues to be the “goat” of their time. A conversation about music tends to get hectic because people have such strong opinions on their favorite artists and artists who they do not vibe with as much. My top five artists do not fall into a specific genre because I listen to a lot of different music but, there are five artists that people should definitely add to their playlist.
- 6lack — Free 6lack (Learn Ya)
- H.E.R — H.E.R Vol 1 (Pigment)
- Syd — Fin (Drown In It)
- Khalid (Location)
- Daniel Caesar (Get You)
These artists are for my R&B/Hip-Hop listeners. The artists that are listed are not artists but they have recently dropped some amazing projects that more people should know about. Do not sleep on them.
