Thursday, July 13 was the day. The day that the nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards were announced. As a huge series lover those awards are not something you ignore, and consequently, I had to react to the nominees. There are many categories, and it's a bit much to react to them all, so I will just say my piece about the most popular ones and the ones I have something to say about in particular. I will also only say something about the series that I have watched myself.
The first thing that caught my eye was that the latest season of Orange Is The New Black did not get any Emmy nominations, this surprised me since it was a very, very strong season. Then I found out that the Emmy's only look at series that aired their episodes between June 1, 2016, & May 31, 2017. Since the latest season, season 5, aired on June 9, 2017, they could not look at it. Next year hopefully!
As expected The Crown, Stranger Things, Westworld, and another newcomer This Is Us got many nominations. That Big Little Lies and Feud are under the nominees also doesn't come as a surprise. Actor nominations go, very rightfully, among others to Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Evan Rachel Wood, Nicole Kidman & Anthony Hopkins. Supporting and guest cast nominees go to Thandie Newton, Millie Bobby Brown, Shailene Woodley and of course many others.
I was also pleasantly surprised that Sense8 (in my opinion this best series at the moment) go a nomination for cinematography, they surely deserve it, but I was surprised they actually got it. I hope they win and that Netflix will renew it, after all, that cancellation is so misplaced. Another pleasant surprise was a nomination for Penny Dreadful in production design. Very good series that ended last year. Glad they snatched an Emmy nomination in their last seconds of fame.
Also nice that Lady Gaga's halftime show got six nominations and a fun fact, Netflix scored 91 nominations this year with their original programming. The most they have ever had, good job.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the nominations. Now let's see if I'm happy with the actual winners. But that's a story for September.
