Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast set in the style of a small town's radio broadcast. The host, Cecil, is the main character that takes us through news relating to finance, traffic, crime, the community calendar, weather, and other updates set in "a small desert town where all conspiracy theories are true"
At this point in time, there's about eight years of recorded material. I'm currently approaching the end of year two within just over 24 hours of listening. The things that happen in every episode are so weird to us (glowing clouds, hooded figures lurking in a forbidden dog park, council members crawling backwards through a window into city hall), but just another day in that town.
The light and comical nature make the podcast addictive and entertaining. Due to their episodic nature, they follow a pattern and are easy to follow. Over time, the listener will start to recognize the name of familiar, reoccurring characters and become invested in their lives - even though they may fade in and out of existence. Additionally, jokes and details from prior episodes never really go away, and reappear when least expected.
Something that took getting used to however, was the fact that the story arcs are way bigger - when compared to an average tv show, for example. In the pilot, a team of scientists, including Carlos, who the host Cecil is very much infatuated with, come to explore "the most scientifically interesting community in the US." Since then, it takes a while for Cecil & Carlos's relationship to develop, but as the plot continues to evolve, you even become a character in the story.
