"Well, you're just into that feminist and 'I don't need no man' stuff."
I heard this after raving about Kesha's inspirational comeback and first single release in four years to someone that saw things a bit differently through a biased lens. Don't get me wrong, I love celebrating different opinions. However, I believe there was a bit of a misunderstanding here.
If you are not caught up on why Kesha was unable to make music for a while, read the details in this Rolling Stones article.
Kesha's comeback with the album "Rainbow" is no ordinary album release after an artist has taken a break from music. The break was caused by a young woman fighting to be able to do what she loves without fear of being controlled by her abuser anymore.
Like all music should, the album stands above political and social opinions to spread healing, comfort and joy for the artist and those that listen to it. It's an anthem and a voice for anyone that has ever been or knows someone that is a victim of abuse of any kind. It is a ballad for anyone that has been told they were not good enough and to give up. It is for anyone that looks in the mirror and sees more negativity and shame than uniqueness and strength. Lastly, it is an amazing example that the bad guy doesn't always win in the end.
While yes, it is an album that feminists can relate to, the messages and intentions reach beyond. Even if you do not like the tune, the journey that led up to this release deserves incredible respect and attention.
So, I personally want to say thank you to Kesha for being an incredible example of strength and fearlessness. Not fearless meaning the absence of fear, but having fear and using it to fuel your fight. You could have easily given up, but you chose to make something beautiful instead out of the rubble, not knowing how the response would be. Thank you and welcome back, it was definitely worth the wait.
Welcome back to impacting millions with your music. Welcome back to doing exactly what you were put on this earth to do. Welcome back to the fanbase that stands by you.
Welcome home, Kesha.
