A Week In the Life Of A Grad Student

Monday

10 Wake up: shower, brush teeth, pack lunch

10:30 Catch the bus

11 Get ready for teaching, collect handouts and such, final rehearsal of planned jokes

12 - 12:50 Teach: Today is student presentations, quell speaking anxieties, take notes while students present.

1 - 1:50 Teach: repeat above steps

2 - 4:50 Class: "Organizational Communication Survey" Communication Course, I present today on Organizational Communication pedagogy (30 minutes), find time to discreetly eat lunch.

5 - 9 Lecture Prep: Prep lessons for next week, make attempts to anticipate what students will ask questions about ("attempts" being the operative word)

9-9:30 Walk home (doubles as workout)

9:30 - 10:30 Call Rachel (friend from Undergrad)

10:30 - 2 Watch Netflix ("Pokemon" Season 16: Unova Region)

2 - Sleep

Tuesday

11 Wake up: Skip shower (no need to impress anyone today), brush teeth, apply extra thick layer of deodorant, pack lunch

11:30 Catch bus

12 - 3 Host Office hours for Class: finish lecture prep, answer student questions, find time to eat lunch

3 - 6:45 Grade: Grade six student essays, grade student presentations from yesterday

7 - 9 Tutoring (my side gig for some extra cash)

9 - 9:30 Walk home (doubles as workout)

9:30 - 10:30 Call Carrie (Friend from Grad school who graduated last year)

10:30 - 2 Watch Hulu ("This Is Us" - Catch up on this month's episodes)

2 - Sleep

Wednesday

10 Wake up: Shower, brush teeth, forget to pack lunch

10:30 Catch the bus

11 Get ready for teaching, collect handouts and such, final rehearsal of planned jokes

12 - 12:50 Teach: Today is student presentations, quell speaking anxieties, take notes while students present.

1 - 1:50 Teach: Repeat above steps

2 - 3 Host Office Hour

3 - 4 Project meeting for Education class

4 - 6:50 Class: "The College Student" Education Policy Course, find time to sneak to the vending machine to get ad hoc lunch/supper.

7 - 9 Tutoring (my side gig for some extra cash)

9 - 9:30 Walk home (doubles as workout)

9:30 - 10:30 Call Jessie (BFF)

10:30 - 2 Watch Netflix (Start "The Great British Baking Show" Season 4)

2 - Sleep

Thursday

11 Wake up: Skip shower (no need to impress anyone today), brush teeth, apply extra thick layer of deodorant, don't pack lunch (eating out today with student intern)

11:30 Catch bus, bus driver is 5 minutes late because he's the one who texts at every other stop

12:05 - 2 Grade, get some reading done for classes [time permitting].

2 - 3 Meeting at Writer's Workshop, final editing for a soon-to-be-published manuscript

3 - 3:30 - Sneak in some reading time for classes

3:30 - 5 Meeting with student intern for my class, eat a Potbelly's

5 - 9 Grade and Study: grade six student essays, grade student presentations from yesterday, finish readings for next week

9 - 9:30 Walk home (doubles as workout)

9:30 - 10:30 Call Christine (friend from Undergrad, in Grad school elsewhere, commiserate over grad school woes)

10:30 - 2 Watch Netflix (Continue "The Great British Baking Show" Season 4)

2 - Sleep

Friday

10 Wake up: shower, brush teeth, pack lunch

10:30 Catch the bus

11 Get ready for teaching, collect handouts and such, final rehearsal of planned jokes

12 - 12:50 Teach: Today is Unit 3 kick-off, hand back Unit 2 grades, transition to Unit 3, manage student expectations about time management in Unit 3

1 - 1:50 Teach: repeat above steps

2 - 3 Weekly Debrief: input student attendance, write up next week's schedule in my dearly beloved planner

3 - 9 Study: Write two annotated bibliographies, prepare manuscript for conference, read and prepare presentation for "Organizational Communication Survey Course" next week.

9 - 9:30 Walk home (doubles as workout)

9:30 - 2 Watch Netflix (Continue "The Great British Baking Show" Season 4)

OR

9:30 - 2 Go out, assuming other grad students are feeling sociable and not equally exhausted.

2 - Sleep

Saturday (AKA Writing Day)

12 - Wake up: skip shower (no need to impress anyone today), brush teeth, apply extra thick layer of deodorant, pack lunch

12:30 - Drive to the office (bus doesn't run today)

12:45 - 7 WRITE: Draft for "Organizational Communication Survey" Course, Draft for "The College Student" Education Policy Course, Finalize soon-to-be-published article (email to Journal editor)

7 - 7:15 Drive home

7:15 - 2 Wine.

2 - Sleep

Sunday

12 - Wake up: Shower (no need to impress anyone today, but, hygiene), brush teeth, no need for deodorant today

12:30 - 2 Clean and do Laundry, play "Rent" soundtrack over the TV (Volume: loud)

2 - 3 Call Mom

3 - 5 Write Odyssey Article

5 - 11 Watch Netflix (Finish "The Great British Baking Show" Season 4)

11 - Go to bed early, Monday starts in 12 hours.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
