It's officially the holiday season and I think it's important to take time out of your day to think of those who are less fortunate. I know sometimes it is hard because we are all loaded down with homework, and jobs and our family, but we also need to consider how lucky we are to have all of those things. Take one minute out of your day to make someone smile, the world needs love right now, and you have the power to spread it.
One of my favorite things to do around this time of year is to buy the next person's order in the drive-thru line. Although it takes a few extra dollars, it doesn't take any extra time to brighten that person's day, especially because you don't know the type of day they've been having. I've also had the barista give me my coffee for free because I volunteer to pay for the next person. Random acts of kindness go a much longer way than you may think.
I also like to volunteer if I find the time. I have stood out in the freezing cold and rang the bell for Salvation Army because I know it's for a good cause. Meals on Wheels is a great organization to volunteer for as well because it makes someones day just a little better. Volunteer work is one of the most rewarding things a person can do with their time.
During the holiday season, people like to go into the city and enjoy all of the hustle and bustle, but there are almost always homeless people around who are freezing. I never give them money but I will offer to go to Tim Hortons or Starbucks and buy them a coffee and a sandwich and believe me, they appreciate it more than you know.
My point is, you never know what someone else is going through so if you can make someones day even just a little happier, do it. That is the point of the holidays after all. I encourage everyone who is reading this to spread a little love and a little cheer.
If you can make one person a day smile, do it. Putting a smile on someone's face is the best feeling. This message shouldn't only be relevant only to the holidays either. This is simply some encouragement and ideas to help you help others.
