We Have To Try, Even If We Don’t Like It

We Have To Try, Even If We Don’t Like It

Donald Trump has been elected president, there, I said it. It’s not an easy concept for a lot of the country to wrap their heads around. It’s weird, it’s unexpected, it’s not exactly welcome…but it’s the truth. We have to deal with it. More importantly, we have to try and give him a chance.

I know, hearing me say that we have to give Donald Trump a chance as president is a weird thing for many people to hear from me, but it’s true. I’m willing to try. I am no big fan by any means, but I am willing to try.

A key point of our democracy is the peaceful transition of power. This means that when the election occurs and the country has spoken on who the president will be, we will accept it and the current president will transition their power to the newly elected president. This was a point of contention at the third presidential debate, where Donald Trump made it vague on whether or not he would respect this transition if Hillary won. Now, Hillary didn’t win, we know that. She conceded though, she understood that she lost and even congratulated Trump on his victory. President Obama has already started working with Trump to make sure the transition between their presidencies are smooth. President Obama, someone who openly advocated for Hillary, is willing to try. We need to give him a chance, even if deep down we do not want to.

Keep in mind that as the people, we do ultimately have the greatest power in this country. Trump has promised to be a president for all American people, we need to hold him to that. What does this mean? It means that if he is targeting minorities (African Americans, Latinx people, Muslims, LGBTQ people, and more) we have to take a stand and make it understood to him that when you target American minorities, you are no longer representing all American people. If that happens, we need to take a stand and hold him accountable for his words and his actions. He’s made promises and we need to hold him to them.

Of course, there are also promises he’s made that we need him to understand that we don’t want him to do, and we need to make that clear. The wall along the border of Mexico, no. Increased border security is one thing, but a physical wall is entirely another. A wall doesn’t physically keep out illegal immigrants, it’s a metaphor showing to the world that we, as a country, are not open to ideas from other cultures and countries. That we are shutting ourselves out from the world. Increasing border security is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, we have borders for a reason. Yes, we have to secure them. But, a wall? We cannot shut ourselves out from the world like that. Banning all Muslims from entering the country? No. We have freedom of religion in America which means you are allowed to practice your religion as you wish. Islam is a valid religion to practice. We cannot ban it because there are extremists in the world. The KKK are extremist Christians, yet they’re still around. You cannot condemn an entire religion because the acts of a small few.

We have to give him a chance to change and grow. We need him to understand that his comments about women and Mexicans are not acceptable. You cannot go around saying that all Mexicans are rapists and murderers. You cannot say that you can do anything to a woman because you are white and wealthy and, now, are the President. You cannot condone the use of your supporters posting on social media using #GrabHerByTheP***y. That is not acceptable. Is he capable of accepting his mistakes and growing and learning? I really don’t know, but we need to give him the chance to.

We have to try and believe that he won’t let our country regress to what we use to people. A country where marriage equality was not a thing. A country where African Americans were treated as lesser simply because of the color of their skin. A country where people think they can do anything they want because they are a straight, white man. This country needs progress and growth, not regression. We need acceptance for every person of every sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, race, and anything under the sun. Everyone needs to be accepted because they are human.

We have to believe that Donald Trump will not only stand up for those who voted for him, but for everyone in this country that didn’t. We all are human and he needs to stand up for us, we need to give him the chance to.

It’s hard, I know. Personally, I spent November 9th avoiding people because I was upset, I will admit. There has been too much negativity on Facebook. Too many posts about what extreme Trump supporters are doing. It’s scary, and I will admit I’m scared. Not only for myself but for many people I care about. We have to try, that’s all we can do. There is no point in being angry for four years, the very least we can do is try until we see what pans out.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
