Starting on September 20th, 2019, we will begin a week-long Global Climate Strike. If you haven't been paying too much attention to what's been going on in these last few weeks, you might want to start now.
My generation seems to be one of the first to start taking climate change seriously. Even so, there are still skeptics everywhere. The sad reality is, most people don't care about things that won't affect them. The generations who denied the existence of climate change for so long won't have to deal with any of the destruction it'll bring later on. Therefore, they have very little incentive to take any action.
The goal of this climate strike is to raise awareness. While there has been some media coverage on the recent severity of climate change, there hasn't been enough for the general public to fully understand what exactly is going on.
So, what is going on?
In short, global warming has been steadily growing worse since the Industrial Revolution. In recent years, scientists have been saying over and over again that we need to start taking action, or the damage done by climate change will be irreversible. Due to recent activities, such as the Amazon burning, some scientists say the projected time we have to start making changes is said to be about 18 months. We are now looking at a scenario where climate change could be irreversible.
Without the general public aware of these things going on, we can't come together to push our government to take any real action. If we can grab enough of the right people's attention with this strike, the hope is we'll start to make a real change globally.
However, it doesn't just stop there. We all need to take action in our everyday lives to help stop this. There is only so much information I can give you in one little article, and there is only so much information I can find on my own. For those reasons, I encourage you all to do some of your own research on this pressing issue.
