We Can Stop Worrying About What's Ahead
Taylor Kanigowski

"What do I need to do to get that internship?"

"How much is that going to be?"

"How will that affect my GPA?"

The first word that comes to mind when we think of college is "stress." We enter this new chapter of life, bright-eyed and ready to go, but then we soon realize the expectation of a university is for us to know what we're going to do for the rest of our lives and how we're going to get there. Wait, what? I am so deeply grateful for the opportunity to pursue a higher education and I don't know about you but I am sick of living paralyzed in fear of failure and the unknown.

I am writing this to tell you that we can stop worrying. Better yet, we are expected to stop worrying.

Countless times The Bible shares that we do not to be afraid.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares The Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope -- Jeremiah 29:11

Trust in the Lord with all you heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths -- Proverbs 3:5-6

In the Book of Joshua, after the death of Moses, God commissions Joshua to lead the Israelites to Canaan. Can you imagine being told by God to lead an entire group of people through the Jordan to a new land? That would be a lot of pressure and uncertainty.

But The Lord assures him, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go," (Joshua 1:9).

Instead of only intellectualizing the concept that The Lord is always with us and ahead of us, let us understand this with our whole hearts. We each have the opportunity to give up our own ways, as well as the ways of the world (university included) is telling us to be and do. Let's be honest, no one really knows what they're doing, so let us drop our egos and give our life to Someone who does.

I am done micromanaging, taking opportunities that only benefit me and worrying about what steps to take in order to create my "dream life." I am going to enjoy and live in today by only worrying about listening and following The Spirit, giving the upmost gratitude and loving others with grace. And by making my choices of today my biggest focus, I can trust that I will be led to a deeper, bolder and more exciting life than I could ever create for myself.

The choice is yours, my dear friends. Join me in freedom from the expectations that are actually holding us back by choosing to accept The Lord to lead our lives.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
