Our first semester is over. Most of you have probably spent much of your time contemplating if this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. It’s not even that you think it’s not the right choice for you. Maybe your major is hands-down the right one—but you can’t help question yourself.
No matter how many professors tell you you’re making the right decision, no matter how many people say you have potential in that field, you are going to question it. Especially in the beginning.
Because, well, how in the hell are we supposed to determine the next forty years of our lives based on the last eighteen?
Fourteen of those years were spent growing into maturity. The two after were spent questioning everything we have ever been told. The year after that is solely there for junior year of high school—aka the worst year of your lives. And the golden eighteenth year was there to make the big decisions.
Is college for you?
If it is, what college?
Is it like what everyone tells you?
What should your major be?
You’re okay at biology so you’ll pick biological engineering.
Is that a mistake?
Should you pick where you want to go or where your friends are going?
You shouldn’t. It should be where YOU want to go.
All these questions and no one to guide year.
Once you make those tough decisions you worry you made the wrong one—until you get there, and all your unanswered questions are finally brought into the light.
You’ll hate it. You’ll love it.
You’ll never want to leave. You’ll want breaks.
You’ll have days where you don’t want to leave your room. You’ll have days where you’ll never want to go back to your room.
You’ll hate your friends. You’ll love your friends.
You’ll question everything — until you won’t.
After the first semester, you’ll know if this was the right choice for you. Your major will still be undecided. Your future will forever be unknown, but you’ll know if this is where you’re supposed to be.
So, is this where you’re supposed to be?
Only you can answer that. Only you can make the decision for you, and remember, everyone questions. Everyone has doubts. Everyone fears. So do not think you're in this alone.
