Thanksgiving has me thinking a lot about what I'm thankful for, and how I want to express it. The people in my life need to know how much I love and appreciate them, and I want to be thankful for myself, too. So, these are seven ways I have found to be thankful for the people in my life and the many blessings I have been given.
1. Daily gratitudes
I know when I am upset or feeling sorry for myself, making a list of the good things in my life is a great way to boost my confidence and remind myself of the finer, more important things in life, like the love of family and friends and the passion to work hard and succeed. Also, lists are the bomb. Do it. You'll thank yourself in the end.
2. Soak it in
Just take a moment to relax, sip on some hot chocolate since it's finally cold outside (can I get an amen?), and remember all the cool things that have happened this week.
3. Pay it forward
Giving is better than receiving. How many times have you heard this statement? That's only because it's so true! Paying for someone else's meal or items will brighten their day and allow you to be appreciate of what you have, and how you have been blessed with the ability to afford these things.
4. Celebrate small victories
You made an A on a quiz? Heck yes! Your roommate left you the last cupcake from GiGi's with a note that reads "Your favorite! Have a good day"? This day is awesome. Take your friends to dinner or buy yourself that pint of Ben and Jerry's. You deserve it. Allow yourself to love yourself, and see the good in others by loving them fiercely, too.
5. Clean out and donate
You get old leggings, you get old leggings, EVERYBODY GETS OLD LEGGINGS!
I do this twice a year, with summer and winter clothes. Don't sell the clothes. Donate them to your nearest Goodwill store or RedCross. You will be so glad to have a fresh closet ready for the next trends, and you will appreciate the opportunity you had to make someone else's day brighter with your selfless giving when they receive your clothes.
6. Spend time with family
I know for college students this can be a little hard. The next best thing to a drive home is a phone call. Moms love that. Texts, calls, emails, Morse code. Let them know you are alive, and love on them while you still have the opportunity.
7. Say a prayer
If all else fails, this brings you back to what it's all about. God's got you, and that's worth saying "thanks".
