7 Ways To Make The Most Out Of Spending Spring Break At Home

Being stuck at home for spring break doesn't have to be boring.

Spring break is coming up, and I cannot wait to finally relax after about 7 weeks of non-stop work. While I’m more than just “really excited,” I feel as if I’m not participating in typical spring break activities like going on vacation, partying on a beach, or having some grand event happen. All I’m planning on is going home, and that’s because I didn’t even think of scheduling something. If you’re like me without any spring break plans, here’s a list of how to enjoy the break while you’re home.

1. Watch Netflix and/or TV.

Yes, I said it. After all this time, I haven’t been able to watch any television. Well, part of it is because I’m just flat-out busy, but another part is that it’s distracting. When I finally go home, tv is my reward. So, find that series you’ve been dying to watch or catch up on a show you’ve missed dearly. Right now, I’m hankering for Riverdale and The Walking Dead. Plus I’m that weirdo who loves to watch Jeopardy! So when that comes on, you can bet that I’ll be in front of a tv.

2. Make art.

You don’t have to be an artist. You don’t have to be a writer. You don’t have to have any type of skills in the arts, but sitting down with paper, pen, or pencil and drawing or writing whatever you want is liberating. You don’t have any professors badgering you to stick with the prompt or follow their instructions. This time, you take the reigns. If you want to go out, find a BYOB painting place like Painting With a Twist or go to a Color Me Mine and take a cool plate back to college with you. Brag to your peers about how awesome your color selection was while your at it.

3. Hangout with hometown friends.

This is what I’m most excited about. My friends and I have been waiting to reunite and have texted each other almost everyday with a countdown of the days left until spring break. All we’re doing is seeing a movie and chilling at each others houses, but that’s fine by us. We LOVE it. We crack jokes, tell stories, and enjoy the company. For me, nothing beats a good time with friends.

4. See family.

Some of us won’t be able to see our family for the rest of the semester while some see them every weekend. Whatever your case may be, still try to meet up with them at least once. Not only will you get that “homey” feeling again, but your family will love the fact that you decided to say “hi” and drop by. Since I’m going home for the entire break, I’ll be seeing my mom every day unless I sleepover a friend’s house. I’m fine with that because I miss her and cannot wait to spend quality time with her.

5. Sleep.

We all need it. The semester consists of all-nighters, tons of work, having a social life, trying to be healthy, and maintaining a sane mind through it all. Being “on” all the time is difficult, and sleep is the rejuvenating medicine for all. So switch off your alarm over spring break, and catch up on those extra z’s. You deserve it!

6. Utilize your house.

In college, you may not be able to cook and use a stove, drive your car, take a shower WITHOUT shower shoes, and the like. When you’re home, you can do all those things. Find a cool recipe you’ve always wanted to try, make a grocery list, and cook for yourself one night. Get in your car and drive around the streets for a bit to clear your head and listen to music. Most of all, TAKE A NORMAL SHOWER WHENEVER YOU WANT. You don’t have to wait for anyone, unless you’re family is huge and has a limited amount of bathrooms. No shoes, no rush, no disgusting bugs creeping up on the walls. Take a shower, or a bath, and relax. Then afterwards, sleep in your own bed. It’s the best feeling in the world.

7. Study and play catch up.

You don’t want to hear this. I know you don’t. I don’t either. Spring break is supposed to be a break, but if you’re stuck without anything to do, pick up a notebook and complete some schoolwork. Afterwards, you’ll feel accomplished since you were able to muster some sort of brain power and apply it to homework. Plus, the doing work will keep your mind refreshed so returning to campus won’t be as aggravating or stressful. You’ll be ahead of the game.

To everyone going on a vacation for spring break, have a wonderful time! To everyone going home for spring break, have a wonderful time! In both cases, you will invigorate yourself. It’s a much needed rest, so enjoy it while it lasts because within a week, the college grind will begin again.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
