For some reason, reading has a bad reputation. Most people will turn to Netflix before picking up a book to read. However, if you are someone that want's to start reading for fun you're in luck. Reading is basically a movie in your head and it's cheaper than streaming.
1. Make the time to read
As an avid reader, I always hear people saying “I wish I could find the time to read.” The truth is, you don’t need to put aside that much time towards reading. Think about all the time you spend on your phone mindlessly scrolling through your Instagram feed. If you replace watching one episode of "Park and Recreation" with reading time, those 20 minutes are all you need to start a new book.
2. Try an audiobook
If you really can’t find the time to read, audiobooks are perfect. If you download an e-audiobook you can listen to it when you drive. Contrary to popular belief, you won’t get distracted and crash into a tree. Audiobooks are also great to listen to while you’re cleaning, making dinner or just too tired to hold up an actual book. If you’re skeptical of audiobooks here is a great list of some of the best YA audiobooks to get you started.
3. Get a library card
Reading does not have to be expensive, people. Library cards are magical, you can literally read whatever you want for free. Plus, libraries are just for physical books. Most libraries have an online collection full of free e-books and e-audiobooks for you to download. Libraries also give you access to highly trained librarians and great online databases. If you can get an e-book on your phone, you have no excuses.
4. Join an online book community
Websites like Goodreads and Bookstr are great tools to keep track of what you’ve read and what you want to read. You can get recommendations from other users, comment and rate books you’ve read, organize your virtual bookshelf and set a reading goal for the year If you’re serious about reading more, these sites are perfect for staying on track.
5. Actively search for books you want to read
The great thing about joining online book communities is that you’ll always have recommendations and news about new releases. If you follow these pages on social media, you’ll always hear about new books and books that you’ll like. If you can spare a few minutes, the New York Times Bestsellers list and Barnes & Noble's website are great resources for finding new reads. Also, whatshouldireadnext.com is a great tool if you are looking for similar reads.
Now get out there and start reading!
