As I'm sure you're all aware of by now, the holiday season is upon us. The national countdown to Christmas has already begun. It's officially beginning to look a lot like Christmas. But getting into the Christmas spirit can be hard when living in a tiny dorm and/or having to deal with the imminent onslaught of finals. So here are a few simple ways to get into the holiday spirit without breaking the bank or disrupting your schedule.
1. Decorate your room.
Decorating your space can be a great way to unwind while simultaneously getting you hyped for the holidays. You definitely don't need any expensive decor to make your space jolly. I bought all of my decorations at the dollar store and my room still looks festive af -- (Snow)balling on a budget. Warning: This part can be a bit challenging, especially if you have roommates. They may not be so down for completely Christmatizing the entire space, so make sure you check in with them before you buy a bunch of decorations.
2. Listen to some festive tunes.
There's Christmas music for every mood and occasion. Spotify and other music services offer a range of options for your holiday listening pleasure, with everything from pop spins on classics to instrumentals for when it's time to cram for finals. Listening to some holiday music is a surefire way to get you feeling a little bit of that holiday spirit.
3. Indulge in seasonal food.
Even if you're so over PSLs, Starbucks and other restaurants are rolling out their festive flavors once again. Everything from peppermint mocha to the more adventurous chestnut praline, sipping on a warm beverage will help fight the cold and get you feeling a little more jolly in no time.
4. Bake some holiday treats with your pals.
Sort of a continuation of number three on this list, but baking some holiday-themed goodies with your friends can be a fun and festive way to de-stress and feel a bit more jolly, while simultaneously enjoying some festive food bonus points if you and your friends wear Santa hats or matching Christmas pajamas during this activity.
5. Ugly Christmas sweaters.
The token "ugly Christmas sweater " is an absolute must-have for your winter wardrobe. If you're looking to ration your cash for all those presents you have to buy, browsing the ridiculous sweaters online can be pretty entertaining if you like puns and sometimes crude humor. But you might as well pick one out. You're bound to have an occasion to wear it some time or another.
6. Look at light displays.
Though it may require you to travel a little bit, there are some pretty spectacular holiday light displays out there that are free to see! Grab some friends and throw on your coziest holiday attire and you've got a festive field trip. Pro tip: Bring some hot chocolate with you or pick up some Starbucks on the way. Warm drinks are awesome because they're delicious and they also keep your hands from getting cold.
7. Go to community holiday events.
Around this time of year, communities and universities start putting on holiday-themed events and activities to get into the spirit of the season. Take advantage of these events to get out and get festive!
8. Watch a Christmas movie.
We're already watching Netflix all the time anyway. Switch it up and watch a classic holiday movie! What's better than getting cozy and enjoying an awesome movie?
Now, go! Get out there and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!
