Every year people make new years resolutions in hopes of improving their lives one way or another. I am guilty of making a list and then by Feb 1 be back to my old ways. In light of the New Year coming right around the corner, I thought why not share some tips so that you can stick to all of the resolutions, not just a few.
1. Be specific.
Specificity will be your best friend. Make a goal that is as specific as possible, this way you can hold yourself accountable based on a yes or no question. Did you go Skydiving before your birthday? Yes, yes I did.
2. Think outside the box.
If you want to say go to the gym more, that’s great. What’s also great: making the goal personalized. Maybe it will be trying a new workout regime or working with a trainer X amount of times a week. Find a goal that works for your personality.
3. Make them realistic.
This one should be a no-brainer but I thought I would add this in just in case. If you are not an astronaut (or training to become one) then you probably shouldn’t put “Go to space” as a goal. Instead maybe add something like “See the space station” or “Try Zero Gravity Plane Ride.” Something that still attains your goal but in a realistic manner.
4. Know your limits.
In essence, this is really knowing yourself. Try not to pick goals that are so far away from the comfort zone you can’t see a faint line.Think honestly about yourself and what you want out of these goals.
5. Enlist the help of friends or family.
Power in numbers. Many hands make light work. Any other cliches? Enlist the help of friends or family, let them help you get to the gym or read those books. Whatever your goal find a way to incorporate a friend, a sibling, or a parent.
6. Don’t be afraid to recycle some from last year.
Last year I wrote, "go to the gym 3 days a week." I am going to recycle this into 2018 because why not. It’s a good goal that I think I will finally accomplish.
7. Write them down.
Finally, put it in writing. Type it and tape it to the fridge. Make it your background. Chisel it into stone. Paint pictures of each one. Whatever your method just write down the list and put it somewhere you can see it. A daily reminder of where you want to be in your life.
